POETRY/LYRIC EXHIBITION & ANALYSIS

Select either a poem or song lyrics to interpret creatively, in presentation form, for the class. The interpretive portion must include a 1-minute introduction or "wrap-up" presenting rationale for your interpretation. It should explain to your audience the thinking/feeling behind your creative interpretation. For example, the rationale might explain what elements of a particular song created a particular visual image for you, and why you believe that image is captured in the black & white photos you have displayed.

The interpretation, itself, might include any of the following approaches:

? creative reading of a work

? dancing to or acting out song lyrics played aloud

? reciting a poem from memory

? reciting a poem accompanied by music

? a poem made into a video

? singing a song live

? acting out a poem with props & costumes

? a work of visual art accompanied by reading/playing lyrics

...or any other combination or variation (except simply pulling a music video off of MTV or pushing a button on a boom box !)

You must also submit a written analysis that employs the poetic elements discussed in class. This analysis should include …

? a discussion of the work’s tone and theme

? a discussion of at least 4 elements from the Poet’s Palette

- define the element

- identify where/how it occurs in the lyrics

- explain how it fits the above definition

- explain how it contributes to the tone and/or theme

*Also, attach a copy of your lyrics with your working notes
