Dear Parents or Guardians,

In the spring each year, 4th grade Students are invited to join Safety Patrol. They need to write a 1 page letter describing why they would be a good candidate for Safety Patrol. They will need three teacher recommendations. This would be based on their classroom behavior and academic performance. Applications are due no later than May 13, 2016.

The Administrative Team will select no more than 20 candidates from the selection of students.

Once selected, students will meet with Ms. Langhorst to go over rules and the understanding of the safety rules. They will train with a current 5th grade student in the last two weeks of school. They are responsible for performing their safety patrol duties during the following times:

Mon., Tues., Thurs, and Fri.: 7:45am-8:15aam & 2:25pm-2:45pm
Wednesdays: 7:45-8:15am & 1:25-1:45pm

To Parents:

Your child has expressed a desire to serve in the School Safety Patrol. Service in the Patrol is voluntary and open to all interested students. Duties will require a short amount of time each day. Members are selected for their courtesy, dependability, interest in their job, physical fitness, attitude towards others and scholastic standing.

The primary aims of the Patrol are:

· To help children cross streets safely on their way to and from school.

· To help children become safe pedestrians.

· To foster qualities of leadership and good citizenship in Patrol members.

School Safety Patrol membership is an honored position. Millions of boys and girls have served since the program started around 1920. Since then, the casualty record among children aged 5 to 14 has improved significantly. Patrols have played an important role in this achievement.

The Safety Patrol follows an award/demerit system to ensure students maintain the high standards of the program. Students receiving several demerits – for failing schoolwork, classroom discipline, being late for duty assignments, etc. – may be temporarily suspended from the Patrol. If disciplinary action is necessary, your full cooperation will be appreciated.

With your endorsement, your child will shoulder responsibilities that will strengthen character and provide an opportunity to help fellow students develop a better understanding of pedestrian and vehicular traffic hazards.
