PLEASE CHECK SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CURRENT YEAR DEADLINE DATES

SCHOLARSHIP BOOK

INTRODUCTION

Applying for college is an exciting process, which involves the whole family. Planning on how to pay for that education, however, can be extremely stressful. To help families afford higher education, the Cony High School Guidance Office has compiled various outside scholarship information into this easy to read resource.

Students and parents must note that the greatest amount of financial aid is awarded by the Federal Financial Aid Program, and disbursed directly from the college to the student. In order to apply for this money, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid ( FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov ) form must be filled out and submitted to a federal processor by the colleges’ deadlines. Each college may also require other types of financial aid forms, such as the CSS Profile Form and/or their own internal form. Please be sure to check with each school for the list of forms needed and their respective deadlines.

School based scholarships awarded on Class Day and graduation are determined by the Cony High School Scholarship Committee and are not included in this booklet. All graduating seniors who are planning to attend a post-secondary institution in the fall immediately following graduation will be considered for these scholarships.

The advantage in applying for scholarships is that these awards can either supplement a college’s financial aid package (which may not meet 100% of your financial need) or decrease the amount of borrowing. Student loans are almost inevitable – most every financial aid package includes some form of student and/or parent loan. Also, many institutions are not able to meet all of a student’s financial aid eligibility. Therefore, any additional awards that a student can find can help offset either unmeet financial need or lower student debt.

Please remember to carefully select the scholarships for which you apply, paying close attention to criteria and deadline dates. Also keep in mind that while some applications are quite involved, others may have very simple application procedures.

We hope this guide will encourage seniors to apply for scholarships, loans and awards. The organizations listed are primarily Maine organizations looking to encourage Maine students to seek post-secondary education. We would like to increase families' awareness of the many possible local, regional and state financial aid opportunities, and reassure them that financial help is available for anyone seeking high education.

We make every possible effort to update scholarship information annually. If you notice any errors, we would appreciate your bringing them to our attention.

Don’t Get Hooked…

On Scholarship Scams!

It is easy to fall victim to scholarship offers that come in the mail promising thousands of dollars in scholarship money for only a nominal service fee. We strongly discourage students and parents from paying a fee to any company to assist in the scholarship search or financial aid application process.

The Hook… The Truth...

“For a fee, we provide a comprehensive list of scholarships.” / Don’t spend money on a fee-based scholarship service. The biggest and best scholarship databases are available for free on the Web.
“Billions of dollars in scholarship money goes unclaimed.” / Statements about funds going unclaimed are often untrue. If funds are available, students will compete for them.
“We have a money-back guarantee.” / Legitimate scholarships are always competitive. No one can guarantee that you will win a scholarship.
“We need your credit card or bank account number” / No legitimate scholarship should require your credit card number or bank account numbers.
“We will do all the work” / To receive a scholarship, students must complete the applications and essays themselves. No one else can do the work for them.
“The national scholarship company needs you to sign the paperwork ASAP.” / An official-sounding name does not mean a company is legitimate. Scams sometimes use words like “national” and “education” in their titles.
