PHILIP C HESSBURG MD

Dr Hessburg, a native of Minneapolis, is a member of the Senior Staff at Grosse Pointe Ophthalmology/Henry Ford Health System. He received his Bachelor’s degree from St John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and is a graduate of Marquette University School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He has served as an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is past President of the Michigan Ophthalmological Society, and a member of the founding Board of Directors of the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society. He was a permanent faculty member of the Welsh Cataract Congress for some years.

He has been active in both the business and creative technical elements related to ophthalmology, serving as Founder and Board Chairman of Health Applications Network and of Mediventures Inc. He is past President of Medical Eye Services of Michigan. He has published over 40 scientific papers and numerous book chapters. He invented the Hessburg anterior chamber intraocular lens, the Hessburg/Barron corneal trephine, and the Hessburg subpalpebral lavage system.

Dr Hessburg is the founder (1972) and currently President of the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. For the past 17 years a major portion of the funds necessary to support this tax exempt organization has come from Eyes on Design, a car show which is an international celebration of automobile design.

The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology is a not-for-profit corporation focusing on programs related to ophthalmic education, research and aid to the visually impaired.

In June, the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology will host the third world congress on the relationship between vision and driving, The Eye and The Auto 2005.

Dr Hessburg is married to Betsy Haupt of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. They have five grown children, and 17 grandchildren.
