Parts of Speech Study Guide

Noun, Verb, Pronoun, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction, Interjection

1. Noun- person, place, thing or idea

· Can be common or proper

2. Verb- shows action or indicates a state of being

· Can be action or linking

· Linking verbs (be able to list these) am, is, are, was, were, be, been, being.

3. Pronoun- takes the place of a noun

· Words like he, she, they, it, I, me, them, etc.

· Hint: instead of saying “The students studied hard so the students could make good grades,” you replace the students with they. – The students studied hard so they could make good grades. They replaces students, so they is a pronoun.

4. Adjective- describes a noun

5. Adverb- describes a verb

6. Preposition- anything a rabbit can do to a log (over, under, around, through)

· Most common prepositions- to, from, in, at, by

7. Conjunction- joins words or phrases

· Fanboys- for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so

8. Interjection- expresses emotion

· Words like wow, oh, no, yes, wait, etc.

Be able to answer questions like the following:

Give the part of speech of the underlined word:

1. The girl likes flowers.

2. The girl likes flowers.

3. She likes flowers.

4. She likes pretty flowers.

5. She quietly picks pretty flowers.

6. She puts the flowers inside a basket.

7. She likes flowers, but bees do too.

8. Ouch, one stung me!
