JUNE 18, 2017 THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

FROM FR. DAN’S DESK…

We welcome this weekend Deacon Kevin McCarthy from our Diocese who will speak at all the Masses regarding Maryknoll Missions. Fr. Shea and I both have known Deacon Kevin for many years since our days at Holy Cross Parish in Springfield. Deacon Kevin is a Permanent Deacon in our Diocese and one of his many ministries is his work on behalf of Maryknoll. He has made many missions trips in his life and is passionate about the important work of such groups as Maryknoll. I know you will all welcome Deacon Kevin warmly this weekend!

We also welcome back to the area our own native son of the parish – Fr. John Tuohey. Fr. Tuohey has worked for many years as a medical ethicist for a Catholic healthcare network out in Oregon. He has recently “retired” from that ministry and is returning to our Diocese. I know his parents – John and Ursula Tuohey feel very blessed to have him coming home. You’ll probably see Fr. Tuohey around the parish and taking a Mass here and there as he gets settled back to living in the area. So we very warmly WELCOME HOME Fr. John Tuohey!

Last weekend was a busy one for us here at the parish with the wonderful Ordination and Mass of Thanksgiving for Fr. Barrent Pease. I know those who attended his Ordination truly were moved by that experience, and those that were able to attend his Mass of Thanksgiving and Reception were overjoyed to celebrate with him such a beautiful occasion. We presented Fr. Barrent with the vestment purchased by the parish for him, and he was grateful for the gift. Thank you all for supporting that effort as well as keeping Fr. Barrent in your recent prayers. But don’t stop praying for him yet – it’s a big adjustment to learn to minister in a parish as a newly ordained priest, so I hope you will keep him in your prayers as he begins his priestly ministry at St. Thomas Parish in West Springfield.

These weeks of Spring contain many celebrations of religious life including the significant anniversaries of religious sisters and brothers in our Diocese. I want to congratulate the Sisters of Providence who recently celebrated the significant anniversaries of 5 of their sisters including my friend and “prayer partner” – Sr. Mary Cecilia Vallee, SP, who celebrated 70 years as a vowed religious sister of Providence. It was my honor to attend a special Mass for Sister and all the Jubilarians, along with our parishioners – Karl and Maryann Weckstrom and Marino and Christina Biagini. Please read more about Sr. Mary Cecilia’s life and ministry in the insert in this weekend’s bulletin.

The Sisters of St. Joseph also celebrated special anniversaries of their sisters including Sr. Mary Shea, SSJ – sister of our own Fr. Tom Shea. Sr. Mary celebrated 60 years as a vowed religious Sister of St. Joseph. Congratulations!

The Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph celebrated two outstanding anniversaries of their sisters – Sr. Benilda and Sr. Christine both celebrated 75 years as a vowed religious Franciscan Sister of St. Joseph. Sr. Beneilda is from Westfield and taught at Holy Trinity School for many years. Our parishioners – Dan, Deb and Danielle Bovat - friends of Sr. Benilda - all made the trip out to Buffalo to celebrate with her! 75 years as a sister is truly a blessing!

Our Parish Tag Sale, held a couple of weekends ago, was a tremendous success! I thank again – Ron and Linda Gerlip – for talking on this fundraiser as an act of love for the parish! They worked tirelessly for several weeks accepting donations, sorting, pricing and cleaning items for the sale. And then were there for the entire 3 days of the Tag Sale! They were blessed by many Volunteers who came to assist them. Everyone’s efforts paid off as we were able to clear a profit of $9,000 for the parish! We will probably actually clear $10,000 in a few weeks when we put a few items up on “Ebay” that we felt were worth a bit more and would garner more when sold on Ebay. Also, I’m not sure if anyone noticed an “antique bible stand” that was displayed near the religious items tables? Someone donated it and I had never seen anything like it before. So I called a friend of mine who knows antiques and I sent her a picture of it and the company name inscribed on it. She sent me back the exact same picture and maker, and it currently sells for $3,800. Glad we didn’t give that item to Goodwill! So if we can sell that item along with a couple of others – our profit for the Tag sale will be over $13,000! Not bad! Thanks to everyone for shopping the Tag Sale as well!

Finally, I need to end on a more somber note – we recently lost a wonderful parishioner, former staff member of the parish, member of the Rosary Sodality, and member of the Schoenstatt Community - Jean Blair. Jean was our Parish Secretary at two different points in her life – the first time for 8 years and the second time for 20 years! When I came to the parish in 2004 Jean was our Parish Secretary. She was very devoted to the parish and to our former pastor Fr. Hugh Crean, who toward the end of his tenure as pastor was beginning to exhibit some signs of dementia. During that time Jean was able to keep things running smoothly in the parish, and help Fr. Crean during what was becoming a difficult time in his life. Jean helped me to settle in here as the pastor who took a very beloved and popular pastor’s place – not an easy thing to do! Jean shared her knowledge of the parish and the people, and her experience was invaluable to me! Jean died very suddenly attending the high school graduation of one of her beloved grandchildren. I want to extend our thoughts and prayers to Jean’s daughter – Suzanne Harlow, her husband Lincoln and her grandchildren – Jacob and Erin from our parish, as well as the rest of Jean’s children, aunts and cousins and extended family in the parish and beyond. Jean, May God grant you His Peace!

God Bless, Fr. Dan

MARYKNOLL MISSIONS

We welcome this weekend Maryknoll Mission Educator, Deacon Kevin McCarthy, who will speak at all the Masses. Maryknoll’s task is to share God’s Word throughout the world, especially among the poor in places where the Church is unknown or in great need. Deacon Kevin will be happy to talk with anyone interested in working short-tern or long-term in Maryknoll’s missions.

FRANCISAN MISSIONARY SISTERS

Next weekend we will welcome once again the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi who will be selling their August Calendar Raffle Tickets here at all Masses. The funds raised help to support the ministry of the Sisters. For $10.00 you can but a Calendar Raffle Ticket and have 31 chances to win between $25 and $100 each day of the month of August. I’m sure my friend Sr. Mary D’Angelo will be helping us from heaven this year! Thank you for supporting her Sisters!

please call Pauline at 862-3885 or Diane at 568-9754.

HARMONY HOUSE TO CELEBRATE OPENING

Great news! Harmony House will celebrate the opening of its first home for the terminally ill at 663 Pendleton Avenue Chicopee, on Tuesday June 20. Many thanks for all those who have, and will continue to support them financially in this work of mercy.

VACATION BIBLE CAMP

Registration forms are available in the gathering space for Vacation Bible Camp being held July 31 through August 4 - “Maker Fun Factory”! Kids ages 4 through entering 5th grade will become hands-on inventors who discover they're lovingly crafted by God through music, games, crafts, and Bible stories. Helpers for this program range in age from students entering 6th grade through adults. Together we can make this the best VBC yet!

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

Bishop Mitchell Rozanski is extremely grateful for the generosity of so many who have given to the Annual Catholic Appeal this year. As the Appeal winds down its “active” phase, it continues to make the request that those who may not yet have given to the Appeal this year, consider making a donation, even a small one, in the weeks ahead. Envelopes with brochures on the agencies and ministries which receive funding from the Appeal are located near the bulletins. THANK YOU as always for your generosity! To date, our parish has raised $43,053 from 317 donors.

2018 MASS BOOK

The 2018 Parish Mass Book is now open for scheduling Masses. Sue in our office will be happy to help you schedule a Mass for a loved one at a weekend or daily Mass. The offering is $10.00. Due to a high demand for weekend Masses, there is a request limit of 6 weekend Masses for the year per family – no more than 3 at any one weekend Mass time.

Also, you may book the Sanctuary Candle for 2018 which burns for 2 weeks ($20) or the Special Intention Candle, Outdoor Mary Garden Candle or Outdoor Veteran’s Memorial Garden Candle, for 2017 and 2018, for 1 week ($10). Masses and candles may be scheduled in memory of a loved one for an anniversary or birthday remembrance. Also, general intentions for the recovery from illness, or a “special intention” can be scheduled.
