SAFETY TIPS
FOR LATCH-KEY CHILDREN
(Parents: Print and place on refrigerator door and review with children often)
For: ___________
(Print Child's Name)
1. Keep key to house in pocket or on your person somewhere; never leave key under mat or near home. Do not attach name or address to your key.
2. Never enter home which appears to have been broken into. Go to nearest neighbor, dial 911 and report the break-in.
3. Never enter home if someone you don't know is near you or trying to get near you; run to nearest neighbor and if need be, make a lot of noise, attract attention.
4. When entering home, have key ready, enter and re-lock door. After you get in house and you think someone has been in the house or still may be in house, leave home and run to neighbor.
5. Don't tell others (even friends) that you are or will be home alone.
6. Never open door to anyone you don't know. Look through peep hole or window and if you have to talk to them, talk through the closed door. If they won't leave, dial 911 and ask for help.
7. Know your name, address, phone number, how to use your phone and know where you can call your parents.
8. Never take any medicine or do anything that your parents would not normally let you take or do.
9. When answering phone, never give out any information the other person does not already know. Never give them your name or phone number or let them know that you're alone. If they ask for your parents say, "They are busy right now, but if you will give me your number they will call you back." If caller won't give you a number and tries to argue with you hang up. Don't talk too long on the phone--keep phone free so your parents can call you.
10. If there is a fire in the house, don't try to put it out. Leave the house right away and run to a neighbor to call the fire department. NEVER GO BACK INTO THE HOUSE FOR ANY REASON!
