POSITION: Assistant Professor of Exercise and Sport Science within the School of Health Studies (tenure-track, 9-month appointment). Position #: 002682.

QUALIFICATIONS: An earned doctorate in Exercise and Sport Science or a related area of study is required. Post-doctoral training is required. Candidates must have evidence of a focused research agenda, ideally in the area of cardiovascular or metabolic physiology. Prior teaching at the collegiate level is desired. The candidate should have experience that complements existing research programs in the School, preferably including both basic (e.g., cell culture, animal models) and applied science (e.g., human subject), with a focus on health and/or disease. Effective oral and written communication skills are strongly desired. Candidates must meet eligibility requirements to begin and continue working in the United States at the time of appointment.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Developing an independent and externally-funded research program is the top priority. A teaching load of three courses per academic year is expected, possibly inclusive of both undergraduate and graduate courses (e.g., exercise physiology, exercise and special populations, nutrients and dietary supplements). The teaching load may be further reduced via buyouts with external funding. Mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students is also expected, as is service to the School, University, and profession.

SETTING: The School of Health Studies (http://www.memphis.edu/hss) offers M.S. degrees in two majors: Clinical Nutrition, and Health and Sport Science (HSS). The HSS major includes concentrations in Environmental Nutrition, Exercise and Sport Science, Health Promotion, Nutrition Science, and Physical Education Teacher Education. The School also offers Bachelor’s degrees in two majors: Physical Education Teacher Education, and Health and Human Performance (HHP). The HHP major includes concentrations in Dietetics, Exercise and Sport Science, Healthcare Leadership, and Health Promotion. There are approximately 900 undergraduate and graduate majors within the School. Salary & beginning Date: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications. The assistant professor position is a tenure-track, nine-month appointment (12 pay periods), with options for paid summer teaching and/or externally-funded research responsibilities. A start-up package will be available to expand the research capabilities in the School of Health Studies. The University offers an excellent benefits package, and the state of Tennessee currently has no state income tax.
