Graduate Assistant Job Description

The GVSU Pathways to College Office coordinates and provides pre-college programming and outreach to prepare and inspire students from underrepresented backgrounds to attend Grand Valley State University. The Graduate Assistant for GVSU Pathways to College works close with the Director and Office Coordinator of the department. The GA for Pathway will assist with the development of the community outreach and will assist, prepare, and expose underrepresented students to college for entry and success at GVSU.

Major Roles & Responsibilities:

Assist in the coordination and administration of the Pathways programs: Michigan GEAR UP, Wade H. McCree, Jr. Incentive Program, including:

  • Facilitate workshops for current high school students and their families
  • Communicate with students and families regarding program requirements
  • Assist in coordinating speakers for workshops
  • Build collaboration and synergy with K-12 offices and GVSU departments, (particularly the Admissions and Financial Offices) to achieve program’s objectives
  • Develop information materials about Michigan GEAR UP and Wade H. McCree program
  • Assist in scheduling and confirming room reservations
  • Assist with maintaining a campus wide pathways inventory database
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Reliable Transportation

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Assist with planning and implementing Inclusion and Equity events
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and monthly divisional meetings
  • Research diversity and intercultural current issues and trends
  • Participate in team projects and programs as assigned
  • Some weekend and evening hours are required

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with and understanding of underrepresented and diverse populations.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Organizational skills with particular attention to detail.
  • Effective interpersonal as well as verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking, negotiation and conflict resolution, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Comfortable speaking in public.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations including high school administration, parents and students.
  • Experience with word processing, spreadsheets and database management.

Important information: The position is a 9-month Graduate Assistantship for 20 hours/week. The tuition for this position is not fully funded and it will only cover up to 9 credit hours of the tuition waiver per semester for fall and winter. The position will pay a $4,000 stipend for each semester.
