October Assembly Report, University Advancement

Advancement News

· University Advancement now has a project highlight case outside our office (next to the 2nd floor restrooms) in which we’ll feature different things our office has worked on in the recent months. The October feature is the ConocoPhilips Integrated Science Building. Stop by and check it out!

- This year’s Celebrity Chef Invitational Event raised more than $105,000

for the culinary arts, hospitality, dietetics and nutrition program

Statehood Anniversary news

· One of the largest upcoming events is the three-day Alaska Historical Society Conference titled “Alaska Visionaries: Seekers, Leaders and Dreamers.” The conference, Oct. 16-18, features a civic conversation about “Alaska 2058: The Next 50 Years”; the annual Alaska Day Lecture, part of the Polaris Lecture Series; and many unique paper and panel presentations highlighting 50 years of ordinary Alaskans accomplishing the extraordinary.

· The Forum of Young Alaskans [http://youngalaskans.org/] met at the new Dena’ina Convention Center on Saturday, Oct. 4 —and via “virtual” and in-person meetings elsewhere—to discuss, debate, and delve into the issues that are important to Alaska’s future.

· Statehood Volleyball Showdown! UAA v. UAF, Seawolves v. Nanooks, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m., will commemorate the anniversary of statehood with UAA’s favorite home-state rivals!

University Relations

· The fall issue of ACCOLADES is in production right now. Watch for the new issue in late October.

· We recently hired a second electronic media specialist in our office, Kathleen McCoy. Kathleen will come to us from the Anchorage Daily News where she’s been an editor and writer for several years. She’s most recently served as the assistant managing editor for the online portion of the News. Kathleen will start at UAA on December 1.

· We are currently working with Nerland Agency on an advertising campaign that will launch after the first of the year. This will likely include t.v, print and new media segments.

· The University Relations team recently worked with UPD, Facilities, Student Affairs and the UAA Emergency Preparedness Coordinator on a mock-disaster preparedness exercise. This is one of several tests of our system that will take place over the next year.

Development

· The Student Calling Outreach Program is up and running for its 10th semester, working to engage UAA's alumni, update them on campus happenings and invite alumni to make a philanthropic gift back to UAA. As of Friday, October 03, 2008—less than a month into the calling season—the UAA Fall FY09 Phonathon has raised a total of $5,465.00. 100 of the donors are new.

· In November, the Chancellor will be joining Seattle UAA alumni for an alumni engagement function.

· Employee donors recently joined the Chancellor for coffee to celebrate employee giving at UAA. The number of employee donors rose by 30% last fiscal year, yet there is great opportunity to grow overall participation rates further. Annual Giving thanks all employees chosing to give to UAA...to impact current and future students
