6 TH NOVEMBER, 2016. BOWLS REPORT

1. COUNTY PLAYER WINS FIRST ROUND MATCH IN SCOTTISH MASTERS

The Co-op Funeralcare Scottish International Open for 2016, is being hosted at the Dewars Centre, Glover Street, Perth, Scotland, from the 5th to the 12th November, 2016, and one of the County’s finest young bowlers is there.

Connor Cinato, Kingsthorpe BC Indoor Section, a wildcard qualifier for this Masters Singles tournament, has scored a significant victory against one of the world’s stars in indoor bowling, Jason Greenslade of Wales, in the 1st Round of this competition on Saturday, 5th November, 2016.

Connor had qualified for this event through the Co-op Funeralcare’s own wildcard competition that they had run country wide, and his drawn opponent for these Finals is a prestigious performer, a former World Champion, and now ranked No. 11.

Cinato is no stranger to the WBT Circuit though having qualified before and he soon proved this with superb bowls against an equally superb Greenslade. It was Cinato though that dominated the 1st set, being 7-2 shots up after 6 ends with 3 ends to play, but Greenslade did not give up and matched Cinato over the last 3 ends, but Connor did not really look in danger of losing the set, and he won it 7-6 shots.

The second set was a much tighter affair, with firstly Connor taking a 2 shots lead after 2 ends, but then Jason fighting back well to draw and then go in front 4-2 shots, until Connor tied up the match at 4 shots each. Connor then took a 2 shots lead at 6-4 with just 1 end to play, and although Jason came close to getting the shots he needed to force a tie-break, Connor denied him that and 1 shot for Jason was not enough and Connor won it 6-5 shots.

Connor went through to the next round, where he will meet on Tuesday, 8 th November, 2016, the England International Robert Paxton, who beat Tony Webb in his first round match on a tie break.

For those of you with the facility, you may watch Connor and all the other participants, in all of the matches being played in this event, via YouTube - just visit tube.com/user/WorldBowlsTour and you will be able to pick up the links for each session.

Connor’s match versus Greenslade is on Session 2, which also has his next opponent’s match against Tony Webb, and Alex Marshall, MBE versus Martin Sandford of Canada.

Not counting the 2 home rinks playing each other, the County won the 4 rink match by a massive 56 shots, with 3 winning rinks and 1 drawn, and the highest scoring of the winning rinks was that skipped by Tina Broderick, which won by a huge margin of 29 shots, restricting their opponents to just 3 shots. CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS SINGLES

3 rd Round: June Smith, Northampton & District IBC beat Rebecca Wigfield, Desborough IBC 21-19 shots.

This was a match which initially went the way of June, as she went into a 7-1 shots lead after 6 ends, but Rebecca then picked up 4 shots to reduce the deficit to just 2 shots, before June then claimed the next 4 ends for a 14-5 shots lead after 10 ends of play. Junior England International Rebecca is a fighter, however, and over the next 10 ends she reduced June’s lead to just 4 shots at 19-15, and with the next 2 ends going the way of the Desborough star, the scores were levelled on 19 shots each to set up a ‘grandstand’ finish. June held her nerve and her game together to collect 2 singles, and a very good win indeed.

June Smith now has another very tough match in the Zone Final, for she will face another England International player, Amy Stanton, Welford-on-Avon IBC, at Daventry IBC on Monday, 14 th November, 2016, commencing at 7.0 p.m.

3 rd Round: Tina Broderick, Wellingborough BC given walkover by Ivy Woods, Kempston Park IBC

PAIRS

2 ND Round: Jeannie Flippance & Rebecca Wigfield, Desborough IBC beat Sue Lane & Louise Haladij, Northampton & District IBC 18-13 shots.

A match in which the Northampton pair scored first and held their own against the very experienced Desborough duo throughout the match, and when at 14 ends played they were just 2 shots adrift at 11-13, a tense finish was expected. Unfortunately for Sue & Louise, Jeannie & Rebecca collected 3 shots on the next end to increase their lead to a more comfortable position, and although dropping 2 shots on the 16th end, two singles to Desborough on the last 2 ends were enough for the victory..

PAIRS

1 st Round: Alison Dring & Walt Winsor, Wellingborough BC beat Viv Gaudyn & Steve Norman, Wellingborough BC 15-14 shots.

This was a match between club rivals, which was very keenly competed for, with very few shots between the two pairs at any stage, and it could easily have gone either way.

David Love & partner, Wellingborough BC beat Graeme Howard & partner, Bedford Borough IBC 22-9 shots

2 nd Round: Dena Bryan & Connor Cinato, Kingsthorpe BC beat Maisie & Jack Lee, Northampton & District IBC 31-7 shots

Elaine & David Cox, Northampton & District IBC beat Pat Starsmore & Adrian Harris, Kettering Lodge BC 18-17 shots

Billie Swift & Andy Smith, Northampton & District IBC beat Sharon & Roger Tansley, Kingsthorpe BC 26-6 shots

Katie Smith & Jamie Walker, Kingsthorpe BC beat Lorna Hughes & George Clifton, Kingsthorpe BC 20-18 shots

Linda Warren & Chris Bland, Northampton & District IBC beat Rebecca Wigfield & Richard Mann, Desborough IBC 20-2 shots.

This match, played at Northampton, was a rather surprisingly heavy defeat for the Desborough pair, clearly Linda & Chris were on top form, and their opponents called it a day after 14 ends of the scheduled 18 ends to play.

Debbie Watkins & partner, Kingsthorpe BC beat Jason Bryan & partner, Kingsthorpe BC 21-20 shots
