Garland Sams Campout, Canton Texas

By: Paul & Mildred Pittman

Prior to the start of the campout in Canton the chief cook from each rig was called and asked if it would be okay if we went out to eat on Saturday instead of having a spread. This question was prompted by the fact that we would have a low attendance and the rec hall did not have a kitchen. The response was overwhelmingly yes. Then the ones that would be driving in were called and told we would be going out on Saturday night instead of having a spread. As the campout progressed, some of the women commented on how good it was to have a relaxing campout where they could just concentrate on having fun. The timing was good since we had just finished the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year season where they had been called on to prepare many special meals and deserts. By the way this was Bud Toleos’ idea.

The campout got off to a slow start. The Toleos arrived early on Wednesday. Then they went back home because Directv was coming to their house to install equipment. The Palmers arrived Wednesday afternoon. Well we at least had two rigs on the ground. On Thursday the Pittmans, Kolb, and Linders arrived and the Toleos came back. Giving us five rigs. On Friday the Prices and Lyles arrived for a total of seven rigs or thirteen people. On Saturday the drive ins were the Blairs, Irbys, and Jim Beasley with his guest Darlene.

On Thursday the games began. With nine people, we were able to support one Joker table and a Santa puzzle. That night we went to eat at Baker’s Ribs.

On Friday with thirteen people you could always find people playing Joker, working on the puzzle and visiting while watching TV in the lounge area. The Santa puzzle was very hard, but they were able to finish it and start on a National park puzzle. Friday night we ate at El Sombrero Restaurant.

Saturday started with the business meeting with our new president Jim Palmer in charge. Then the games etc began. Since we had three drive ins, we were able to support two joker games plus the puzzle and lounge area. As the ladies worked on the puzzle, one of the topics they discussed was scenic views and vacation spots. Mildred had some pictures to show. Wanda Price talked about places where the Garland Sams have camped in the past both good and bad. Someone in the lounge area was quite noisy. ZZZZZzzzzzzzzz. Saturday night we went out to eat at Robertson’s Red Barn Restaurant. We had all you can eat seafood. We sat at two long tables in a side room. They paralleled each other allowing us to visit across tables. When we got back to the campground we had birthday cake and ice cream, followed by our chapel service. Ty Kolb spoke from the book of Acts about the early churches.

In summary this campout was slow-paced and relaxing. It was a great way to end the 2015 holiday season and start a new year.

Doctor Bloom, who was known for miraculous cures for arthritis, had a waiting-room full of people when a little old lady, completely bent over nearly in half, shuffled in slowly, leaning on her cane. When her turn came, she went into the doctor's office, and emerged within 10-minutes walking completely erect, with her head held high.

A woman in the waiting room who had seen all this limped up to the little old lady and said, "It's a miracle! You walked in bent in half and now you're walking erect. What did that doctor do?"

"Miracle, shmiracle. . . he gave me a longer cane."
