Introduction

The Nelson Marlborough Branch of the Institute of Directors welcomes your application for its Aspiring Director Award 2016, sponsored by Duncan Cotterill.

The Award, not intended for experienced long-term directors, is open to Nelson Marlborough branch members and intending members of the Institute of Directors. Its purpose is to identify and recognise those who are embarking on their governance careers. Applicants will be committed to the discipline of good governance, be actively seeking directorship appointments and have already taken steps to advance their governance career.

Eligibility

The following requirements should be met in order to be eligible to apply for the Aspiring Director Award 2016. Please confirm, by checking the boxes in the first column, that:

Yes / Criteria
You are or intend to become a member of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand.
You have the right to live and work in New Zealand for a period of at least five years.
You have never been disqualified as a company director in New Zealand or overseas.
You are currently seeking Board appointments in a commercial or not for profit entity (ie it is not something that you are looking to do in the future).
You have at least 3 years’ experience in a senior management role in either the commercial sector, public sector, as a professional business advisor or from growing your own business.
You have at least 12 months experience of boardroom practice as either a director/trustee or working closely with or reporting to a board.
You have a clear appreciation of the roles and responsibilities of a director under the Companies Act 1993 and an appreciation of the distinction between governance and management.
You have an ability to understand the financial statements and financial position of a company through review and interpretation.

Please note, given that the intention of the Award is to recognise those embarking on a governance career, the judging panel may consider some applicants with considerable governance experience to be ineligible if one or more of the following applies:

·  The applicant is already on a board or boards with an annual operating revenue of over $10 million and/or with more than 20 staff

·  The applicant holds three or more directorships

·  The applicant’s main source of income is from directorships

·  The applicant has held a position as Chair of a board for more than 3 years.

Judging criteriaThe Award, at the discretion of the Nelson Marlborough branch committee, will be granted to the applicant who in the view of the judging panel most clearly evidences the potential to develop as a director and demonstrates merit in terms of the following criteria:

·  Demonstrates a commitment to and a sound understanding of governance principles and the meaning of good governance

·  Is not yet widely recognised as a director

·  Displays the professional experience and abilities that would be useful to a board

·  Has taken personal steps to advance a directorship career

·  Has had some governance experience, for example with a community organisation or at a senior management level interacting with a board

·  Has had some experience at a senior management level with governance exposure

·  Is committed to the development of the Nelson Marlborough business community, including both the commercial and not-for-profit sectors

Demonstrates a commitment to developing a career in governance.
