The St. Joe Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests (IPNF) will soon be filling our permanent full-time GS-11 Recreation position. The purpose of this Outreach Notice is to inform prospective applicants of this upcoming opportunity. The duty location will be at the St. Maries Office of the St. Joe RD, located in St. Maries, Idaho.

About the Position:

§ Administers a complex urban and rural forest district recreation, trails, roadless, wild and scenic river, recommended wilderness, partnerships, interpretive programs, and OHV management.

§ Oversees a staff of four to seven permanent positions and numerous seasonal positions. Develops a plan of work and implements and tracks a budget.

§ Provides professional advice and support in the planning, designing, development, implementation, and evaluation of program/project activities. Completes NEPA for projects.

§ Serves as the unit partnership coordinator and liaison, developing relationships with community, user groups, and other agencies. Works closely with non-profits and other partners to implement the multiple programs of work for the district.

§ Oversight, execution, and monitoring of grants and agreements

§ Develops and maintains effective external and internal cooperative relationships. For example: with other government agencies, non-governmental organizations, conservation groups, private foundations and others interested in partnering with the Forest Service.

§ Provides leadership for planning and implementation of interpretive services and conservation education programs on the districts and with partners.

About St. Maries, Idaho:

The main office for the St. Joe Ranger District, is located in the town of St. Maries, Idaho. St. Maries is located about an hour drive south of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho (Coeur d'Alene Visitors Bureau :: Home), and 1.5 hours southeast of Spokane, Washington. Located at the confluence of the St. Joe River and the St. Maries River, this town of 2,600 people is adjacent to the scenic Lake Coeur d’Alene.

This full-service community provides elementary, middle and high schools; hospital and clinic; grocery store; library; volunteer fire department; banks and credit unions; nursing home; restaurants, clothing, sports and hardware stores; golf course, bowling alley, swimming pool, city park, river front park, basketball courts, soccer, softball and baseball fields; and over a million acres of forested lands (750,000 acres of which are USDA Forest Service). There are many campgrounds and trails located in the beautiful and unique St. Joe and St. Maries watersheds. The Wild and Scenic, St. Joe River is nationally known as one of America’s best blue-ribbon trout waterways. It flows into the recreationally popular Coeur d’Alene Lake and is further surrounded by very unique and nationally known Hiawatha Trail and Emerald Creek Garnett Area. The major transportation corriders to St. Maries are State Highway 3 and State Highway 5. The Spokane International Airport Spokane International Airport is the main hub for air travel (approx. 2 hour drive north and west from St. Maries).

Government housing may be available at the Avery Ranger Station (approximately 40 miles from St. Maries) or the Avery Work Center (approximately 47 miles from St. Maries). Many District employees live out of town in surrounding communities.
