National Minimum Wage.

Commenting on the report, The Minimum Wage: silver bullet or poisoned chalice? Kevin Courtney, Deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers’ union, said:

‘In a civilised society it is entirely wrong to be suggesting that one way to reduce unemployment is to allow employers to pay staff as little as possible. The idea that getting rid of the NMW for under 24 year olds will be of a benefit to everyone is utter nonsense. All it will do is encourage the exploitation of young people and a race to the bottom for wages.

‘These are backward looking proposals which would result in untold hardship for workers. The TUC has highlighted the fact that 20% of people across the country are paid less than the Living Wage. This is a dreadful state of affairs. Young people deserve to be treated with respect and employers need to recognise their responsibilities to their staff regardless of age’.
