National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA)
NGA is both a national intelligence agency and a combat support agency, and it serves as the functional manager for Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT). GEOINT is the exploitation and analysis of imagery and geospatial information to describe, assess, and visually depict physical features and geographically referenced activities on the earth. NGA's mission is to produce timely, relevant and accurate GEOINT in support of national security objectives.
NGA creates and provides easy access to geospatial intelligence in all its forms (maps, charts, image derived products, and digital representations), from whatever source (national and commercial imagery, imagery intelligence, and geospatial data and information) to provide decision makers and warfighters with the knowledge foundation needed for decisive planning and action.
The Naval Oceanography Program partners with NGA to provide critical hydrographic and geodetic data to meet Department of Defense requirements and assist with NGA production efforts. The Oceanographer of the Navy represents the Navy's Geospatial Information & Services (GI&S) requirements to NGA and validates all Navy GI&S standards and requirements.
