People currently working towards this qualification may either complete the requirements by 31 December 2020 or transfer their results to the replacement qualification.

The National Certificate in Conservation (Trainee Ranger) (Level 3) [Ref:0642] recognises the base competence, knowledge, and skills required to start employment as a ranger in conservation estates of New Zealand. The qualification recognises the multiple skills and knowledge required to work successfully with our natural environment and interface with the public who use and enjoy this environment.
The compulsory standards enable recognition of a range of practical skills required to operate in the outdoors. People awarded this qualification will have knowledge and skill in safety and crisis management in respect of fire, agrichemicals, equipment, weather conditions, and outdoor navigation. Practical skills include those in administrative and customer services, and effective communication skills. This qualification also recognises theoretical understanding of the natural environment through the compulsory standards and the elective section.
Elective 1 of this qualification provides candidates with the flexibility to select standards that best meet their learning needs and interests. Candidates have an opportunity to gain a range of skills and knowledge including but not limited to - an understanding of the ecology of plants; investigative skills within an ecological context, understanding of contemporary biological issues, and/or an understanding of animal and plant behaviour.
Elective 2 of this qualification allows candidates to further their knowledge of, native birds, native insects or native freshwater fish species and their significance to Māori.
This qualification leads on to the National Certificate in Conservation (Level 4) [Ref:0797].

Transition Arrangements
Version 4
Version 4 was issued in order to maintain achievability for candidates. Expiring standards were removed or replaced and the classifications, titles, credit values, and levels of reviewed or revised standards were updated.
Changes to structure and content
· Total credit value of the qualification increased from 133 to 136 credits.
· Standards 6401 and 6402 were replaced by standards 26551 and 26552; and standards 6915, 19056, 19057, 19058, 19059, 19060, 16082 and 21564 were replaced by standards 26542, 24554, 24557, 24559, 24561, 24563, 26037 and 27215 respectively.
· Fencing unit standards 19124, 19125, and 19126 were removed from the qualification.
· Biology unit standards 6294 and 6311 were removed from the qualification.
· Elective 1 was changed to include 11 credits at Levels 1 to Level 4 from the Biology domain. Note however that unit standards 6314 and 6315 from Elective 1 in version 3 may be continue to be used towards meeting the requirements of Elective 1 in version 4.
· Credit values for standards 3286, 3287, and 20159 were updated.
· Title, level, and credit value for standard 6917 were updated.
· Titles of standards 57, 111, 424, 2784, and 20159 were updated.
· Reverse transition was added for version 3.

This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards – see table below.

Existing candidates currently working towards version 3 of the qualification may complete that version or transfer to version 4. There will be no new enrolments into version 3 of this qualification. All new candidates will be enrolled into version 4.
The last date for assessments to take place for version 3 of this qualification is December 2013.
Training programmes for version 4 of the qualification may start as soon as the qualification is registered.
It is not intended that anyone be disadvantaged by this revision. However, anyone who feels they have been disadvantaged may appeal to The Skills Organisation at the address below.
Previous versions of the qualification
Version 3 was issued in order to update titles, levels, credits and classifications of standards following various reviews, and in particular to replace the expiring Horticulture standards.

People who wish to complete version 3 should note, however, that they must complete unit standards 6294 and 6311 before they expire on 31 December 2012.
