Volunteer Position / Exotic Plant Removal and Trail Maintenance Volunteer
Park / Crystal Lake Sand Pine Scrub, Deerfield Highlands Nature Preserve, Helene Klein Pineland Preserve, Highlands Scrub Natural Area, Hillsboro Pineland Natural Area, Military Trail Natural Area, Saw Palmetto Natural Area, Herman & Dorothy Shooster Preserve, Tall Cypress Natural Area, West Creek Pineland, Woodmont Natural Area
Description of work involved / Volunteers will remove invasive plant species and debris.
Hours volunteers can work / Ongoing.

1=easy
5=physically demanding / 2-5
Volunteers will work outside removing plants and gathering seeds and debris to enhance and restore natural plant and animal communities. Planting of native vegetation and similar activities as needed. May assist at all 11 parks. Long-sleeve shirt, long pants and closed toe shoes recommended.
Skills required / Use of gardening tools; bending, lifting, carrying
Shady or full sun area / Mostly full sun
Access to restroom facilities / Restroom facilities are available at Tall Cypress and Hillsboro Pineland. Facilities are unavailable at the other nine sites.

Small Group-up to 30
Large Group-over 30 / Individual, small or large group with prearranged project date.
How often do volunteers need to work on site? / This is an ongoing project, but prior arrangements need to be made.
Tools and equipment provided / Shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows or carts, and other items needed, gloves and trash bags.
Tools volunteers can bring if desired / Any gardening tools that volunteers want to use.
Personal items to bring / Sunscreen, hat, insect repellent, closed-toe shoes, gloves, water and snack, cell phone. Long pants and long-sleeve shirt recommended.
Personal Protective Equipment will be provided as needed / Personal protective equipment will be provided as needed with instruction in proper use.

Volunteer Application Deadline / These positions require the Workday Volunteer Application, which must be completed and brought to park on day of project. The Volunteer Application will be required if workers desire to return for ongoing opportunities.
Orientation/Training / Volunteers must attend an initial training, which will take place during the first half-hour of the workday.
Restrictions / Volunteers will plant ONLY plants that are provided by the park as needed.
Volunteers will use ONLY fertilizer and mulch that are provided by the staff as needed.
Personal protective equipment will be worn as needed.
Extra comments / This project is part of an ongoing effort to remove invasive plants from Natural Areas to promote the growth of native species.
