Counterclaim-This is when someone does not agree with the claim you made. You have to acknowledge there may be opposing views, but then you refute or state your best reason of why they are wrong.

This is necessary:

1. Because the writer needs to acknowledge that not everyone thinks like them. The writer is trying to show that everyone should think like them because their reasons are much better.

2. Because it makes the writer’s claims stronger by being prepared for other people’s criticisms.

A rebuttal explains why the counterclaim doesn’t make sense.

Ex-Many teachers think gum will end up under desks, but middle school students need to practice responsibility.
