Success Stories of MGNREGS in Gujarat:-

NREGA was launched on 2nd February 2006 as a momentous initiative towards pro-poor growth. For the first time, rural communities have been given not just a development programme but also a regime of rights. The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (NREGA) guarantees 100 days of employment in a financial year to any rural household whose adult members are willing to do unskilled manual work.

This work guarantee also serves other objectives: generating productive assets and skills thereby boosting the rural economy, protecting the environment, empowering rural women, reducing rural urban migration and fostering social equity, among others. The Act offers an opportunity to strengthen our democratic processes by entrusting a principle role to Panchayats at all levels in its implementation and promises transparency through involvement of community at planning and monitoring stages.

Village Motipura, Block Vadgam, Dist. Banaskantha.

Banaskantha is one of the backwards districts covered under B.R.G.F. in Gujarat and Motipura ,a tiny village comprising about a hundred families mostly belonging to S.C. & S.T., under Vadgam block, is located twenty K.M. away from the district head quarter, Palanpur.

The socially & economically backward inhabitants of Motipura were not able to grow any crop/vegetable for want of irrigation facilities till the last year. However, construction of new wells under MGNREGS has changed the scenario completely. Today the position is that the local inhabitants utilize their small land optimally for growing vegetables and seasonal crops with water from the newly constructed wells and they need not go out of their village for earning livelihood.

The construction of wells generated 7266 man days and also total earning of Rs. 6, 64, 645 for the villagers under MGNREGS, during the financial year 2008-09.

Village Karmadi, Block Amirgadhh Dist. Banaskantha.,

Similarly, Karmadi a small village with 58 B.P.L house holds all belonging to S.T.community. Falling under Amirgadh block the village is located 40 km from the district head quarter- Palanpur of Banaskantha district.

This village is geographically situated near the hilly regions without any scope for agricultural growth. No worth wile developmental activities were carried out in the village since the village did not have good infrastructure, not even an approach road. The D.R.D.A of Banaskantha district under took contruction of an approach road under MNREGS at a cost of R.S. 2.90 LAKHS.

The village whole heartedly engaged themselves in the labour work for this purpose which generated 100 days of employment @ R,S 87.50 per day for 47 house holds.

Thus, Karmadi village is now easily accessible even during monsoon season with construction of approach road and the B.P.L house holds of this backward remote village are able to earn their livelihood through MGNREGS.
