Penderry Provider Planning Forum No 14

20 April 2015

South Penlan Community Centre

VB Write up

The 14thmeeting of the forum maintained its number of participants at 17with 7new faces. As the weather was good we started the session outside, where everyone was warmly welcomed, given a quick introduction to the purpose of the meeting and the programmebefore brieflyintroducing themselves. Participants then formed groupsto networkandpreparelunch givingeveryone the opportunity to learn more about what others do and start to identifypotential working links.

Lunch was followed by sharing‘deals going down’ at this meeting and checking progress on ‘deals that went down’ at the last.

‘Pride in Penderry’ and NRW’s Tawe Trial

Fran Rolfe of Natural Resources Wales (NRW) outlined the Tawe Trial; that it is one of 3 projects in Wales concentrating on an area-based approach, looking at social, economic and environmental implications of improvements through an ecosystems approach, driven by the new Environment Bill.

She gave some background and insight into the meetings that the Tawe Trial and Cynefin had convened to look at Penderry. This added greater detail to the updates given by Jerry Griffiths at previous forum meetings (see previous write ups).

The group had considered 4 clusters of activity to concentrate on:

  • Colour, texture and vibrancy – noting that the area was very green but flat-green; grassed and windswept – a range of ideas for planting trees and flowers were being explored and some acted upon.
  • Internal Pride, external interest – looking at the undiscovered/uncelebrated aspects of the area and how they could be accessed e.g. historical aspects that could form part of a community archaeology project (see Janet Bailey GGATs presentation in previous meeting’s write up), viewpoints, cycle paths, other natural features, geocaching and arts projects.
  • Enhancing Existing Features - Ideas for improving what is already there – bringing other amenities e.g. seating and barbeque areas where people gather and build campfires, cycle routes/paths, play areas near Penlan pond, planting and art etc.
  • Community Engagement – to find ways to listen to and involve local people in decisions about potential improvements and in physically getting involved in making improvements with volunteering and qualification benefits built in. First step in finding out how to get in touch with local people was to attend this forum meeting.

See the write up of last Pride in Penderry Meeting (6 March 2015) for greater detail regarding the 4 points above.

Victoria explained that the importance of the Pride in Penderry project was driven by a need to address alternative transport routes both to bring in visitors, provide for school and work opportunities and to increase interest in the area by residents themselves and potential visitors. It was evident that the area had a range of enhancing features which were undervalued and that manyof its previous environmentalplans and developments had been ad hoc, often dependent on funding availability and trends.

Creating a vision for the area was an important step so that some of it could be realised in the shorter term and where not, could still be completed, years into the future. Looking at the likely career spans of many of the young professionals who were involved in this, it could provide an invested vision to be checked, revisited and reworked etc with local people for the next 25+ years.

The Pride in Penderry group was keen to listen to local people and meeting workers in the area through this meeting was agreed to be the first important step.

The diversity of the Pride in Penderry group meant that it was not looking to rally behind a single project but that its member organisations would carry out projects and activity independently or jointly with others, working under the umbrella of the group, taking care to communicate with others to ensure that any action wherever possible fitted/enhanced their plans and did not unduly compromise others e.g. Fran explained that NRW is considering future maintenance fornew features within its project plans for wild flower planting rather than leaving cost to fall to District Housing as landlord.

To conclude, the Pride in Penderry group members present agreed that they would attend the next Provider forum meeting to further develop relationships before any future meetings as the Pride in Penderry group.

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be held Mon 8 June 2015, venue tba, usual times 12.00 – 2.00 pm.
