NHD 2018: Conflict and Compromise in History, Mr. Thein, 7th Grade S.S.

December 1, 2017

Dear Seventh Grade Students and Parents,

We began National History Day (NHD) this past week, a required part of our seventh grade social studies curriculum. The 2018 NHD theme this year is “Conflict and Compromise in History.” The students will work on NHD until the final due date, Tues. Feb. 28, 2018, but students advancing to District, State and National History Day will keep improving their projects into the spring. Enclosed is a tentative calendar with incremental due dates that organize NHD into smaller parts. Please read this letter and the attached calendar, and view the NHD website to be more familiar with NHD. The bullets below answer the most commonly asked questions about History Day:

●  Five NHD Categories: 1. Exhibits 2. Websites 3. Performances 4. Documentaries 5. Research Papers

o  We will look at sample projects in class. Work alone or with a partner on exhibit boards and websites; on documentaries and performances, groups of 3 are allowed. You must work alone on research paper.

●  Supplies: Use a folder for all NHD materials and a spiral notebook for note taking. There are specific supplies for each category area, such as exhibit boards. Download the NHD Rule Book on the NHD website.

●  Homework: We will research topics in class, but plan on spending a “significant” amount of time outside of school working on NHD. Please stay current on all your reading, note taking and assignments and try to avoid procrastinating so you don’t fall behind.

●  Notes and Worksheets: Notes will be checked in class. Worksheets will be assigned to guide research. Groups must turn in separate copies of notes & worksheets.

●  Work Independently or w/a group? Think about if your learning style is more conducive to independent or a group work. Before you commit to someone, check to see if your schedules are compatible.

HISTORY DAY HULLABALOOS are research open houses for NHD help from mentors & librarians. Plan on arriving early because mentors work on a “first come first serve” basis. Bring home a certificate showing you attended & I’ll give you 10 extra credit pts. providing you met with a mentor and stayed for at least 1.5 hours.
