Outcome: Participants will learn about the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) framework and its role in science education, including the 2014 GED® test, as well as the meaning, purpose, and practices of science. / Time Required: 40 minutes

/ America has fallen behind much of the Western World in science. The NGSS attempts to remedy this by emphasizing science practices rather than science facts.
Nature of science / Question participants about their concepts of science.
Scientific theories / Analyze the meaning of “theory” to both the layman and the scientist.
Assessment/Evidence: Assessment will be based on participant interaction and responses during the presentation and the end-of-lesson review.
Technology Integration: PowerPoint
Ideas for Lesson Extension: Research Internet media to locate politicians, pundits, and talking head interviewees who use the word “theory” relating to a science and determine if the word is being used correctly.
