Multi-paragraph Essay: “The Scarlet Ibis”
1. In “The Scarlet Ibis,” Brother’s actions weigh heavily on Doodle. As we discussed in class, it is oftentimes difficult to discern Brother’s altruistic motives from his selfish motives-- what he does out of compassion versus what he does out of pride. In either case, however, his actions have serious effects on Doodle.
In a multi-paragraph essay, share how Brother’s relationship with Doodle illustrates how complex and even paradoxical love can be.
(Ask yourself if his actions produce positive or negative results on Doodle and formulate a thesis based on your assessment.)
2. Authors often imbed symbols in their stories to enhance a theme and/or a character’s traits. We discussed how James Hurst uses birds, and more specifically the scarlet ibis, as a symbol to enrich the meaning of his story.
In an organized essay, choose two symbols from the story and share their meanings. Be sure to convey how they enrich the understanding of the story and relate to theme.
