Course Description:
This course provides students with the opportunity to create and manipulate images in the world's leading digital editing software program - Adobe Photoshop. Students will explore the many facets of Photoshop, a digital darkroom for use in all types of graphic work including; retouching, filtering, layering, silhouetting, and adding special effects to images. Students will also learn the basics of digital photography and scanning while creating various school projects.
Objectives:
The student will:
· Demonstrate the ability to scan, edit, and manipulate images.
· Understand the operation of a digital camera.
· Demonstrate an understanding of the tools, filters, and pallets used in
manipulating images in Photoshop.
· Understand the Adobe interface and how it interacts with other application programs.
Instructional Methods:
The class will consist of lectures, individual instruction, group demonstrations, hands-on projects and activities.
Instructional Materials:
Students will use; Computers, scanners, cameras, software, printers, paper, related texts and tutorials.
Course Content:
· Origination of images (scans, photos (digital/film), stock, created)
· Understanding Photoshop Work area (menu bar, tool bar, tool options bar and palettes)
· Working with preferences, opening and saving files
· Working with tools (selection, painting, masking, erasing, zoom, etc.)
· Working with pallets (layers, history, color, character and paragraph, etc.)
· Working with color and tone (hue and saturation, color balance and desaturation)
· Working with type (fonts, size, color, shape, rasterizing, embossing and stroking)
· Working with filters (artistic, rendering, etc.)
· Editing (retouching, erasing, painting, resizing, etc.)
· Using Photoshop in conjunction with other application programs ( Image Ready and Dreamweaver)
· Basic Operation of a digital camera.
Suggested Activities
· Colorize black and white line drawings
· Adjust Hue/Saturation of a colored image
· Create image/photo montage
· Create CD/DVD cases
· Create movie posters
· Restore old/damaged photographs
· Edit stock imagery
· Create Advertisements
· Apply Text effects
· Load and use new brushes
· Create greeting cards, envelopes and business cards.
Grading Rubric: 0-10 scale
9-10 Excellent- Student shows complete understanding of what is expected.
8-9 Above Average- Shows a basic understanding of nearly all that is expected.
7-8 Average- Shows a reasonable understanding of the material.
6-7 Marginal- Shows limited understanding of what is expected.
0-5 Shows less then marginal understanding of what is expected.
