Did you know? A deep bias against mothers exists in America today.

On average, women still make less than men, but what is remarkable is the wage discrimination mothers face.

$1 dollar = men

90 cents = women without children

73 cents = mothers with children

60 cents = mothers without children

Remarkable but true, most other countries in the world have better family policies – and smaller wage gaps than we do. In fact, out of 173 countries, only 4 don’t provide some form of paid leave to new mothers - Liberia, Papua New Guinea, Swaziland and the U.S.A. There is also a common, hidden bias against working mothers -- and ¾ of mothers are in the labor force. One study found that in the U.S. mothers were 79% less likely to be hired than equally qualified non-mothers.

This begins to explain why there are so many women and children living in poverty and why there are so few women in leadership!

Working together, we can change this!

MomsRising.org is working to bring millions of people together who share a common concern about the need to build a more family-friendly America. Started in May 2006, MomsRising.org already has more than 125,000 members (and growing!) and more than 75 aligned organizations working together on family friendly issues.

Our members are moving important motherhood and family issues to the forefront of the country’s awareness and are working to break the logjam that’s been holding back family-friendly legislation for decades.

MomsRising.org offers easy entry into citizen advocacy, and is bringing the power of online organizing to motherhood and family issues.
