Mpumalanga Celebrates Freedom Day

Emthonjeni - Eighteen years into democracy, South Africa has a lot to be proud of and what better day to celebrate one of the milestones that have come about as a result of the liberation of our country than on Freedom Day which is observed annually on April 27.

This year we celebrate Freedom Day on Friday, April 27, 2012 at the Fano Masina Stadium at Emthonjeni near Entokozweni - formerly Machadodorp, starting at 09:00. Prior to that, there will be a Freedom Walk at 07:00 at Mandela Street at Emthonjeni, which will be followed by visits to legacy projects in Emthonjeni. Legacy Projects will include the launch of the Community Residential Units Project (CRU) a housing project by the Department of Human Settlements which has seen the completion of 150 units in Emthonjeni. The 150 units comprise of two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and a living area furnished with ceramic tiles. The Department of Education has also committed to handing over school uniforms to 30 learners from the Sikhulile Secondary School and SASSA will be handing over food vouchers to 75 beneficiaries.

President Jacob Zuma’s address will be broadcast live on big screens.

Celebrated under the theme, “Working together to promote unity and prosperity for all”, the day seeks to promote unity amongst the people of South Africa and also to emphasize that regardless of colour, race, gender, religion or nationality, freedom and human rights should be enjoyed by all human beings living in South Africa. This day also provides a platform for all South Africans to collectively participate in the commemoration of the pain and struggle our struggle icons endured to build a non-racial, democratic and free South Africa in which we all have the freedom to prosper.

On 27 April 1994, millions of South Africans for the first time exercised their hard-won right to vote for political parties of their choice. Since that day, South Africans have had four free and fair national and local elections.

Patrons can look forward to entertainment by DJ Malinga, DJs Nticks, Storm, Trevor Mabuma Boys, Black Evolution and many more.
