JOB TITLE

/ MANAGER – CAREW CASTLE/MILL (2 year appointment)

OVERALL PURPOSE

/ The development and sensitive management of Carew Castle and Tidal Mill focusing on providing a first class experience for a wide range of visitors
GRADE / Scale 6 (£22,443 to £23,945 pa)
RESPONSIBLE TO / Head of Discovery

/ Discovery guides, educational contributors, events contributors, admin assistant, placements, volunteers and temporary staff

Main Responsibilities

a)  Visitor Management

·  Plans, develops, manages and monitors a programme of activities and events, projects and initiatives to help the enjoyment and understanding of the special qualities (natural and built) of PCNPA’s Carew Holdings and of the wider environmental/sustainability issues which they help illustrate.

·  Recruits, develops and manages staff and volunteers to provide an exceptional experience to all visitors.

·  Ensures all visitors are welcomed and helped to discover the wonderful stories that Carew has to offer and their relevance to Park messages and principles.

·  Working with the other Park Centres (St Davids, Newport, Castell Henllys and Tenby) to develop and deliver coordinated tourism and educational service across the Park.

·  Works closely with the Discovery Team Leader on projects and initiatives leading to both market and product development.

·  Promotes and spreads news of Carew opportunities through marketing and communication including social media.

·  Surveys and monitors users (and potential users) as learning and improvement opportunities and for generating business opportunities.

·  Develops the commercial aspects of the site including visitor numbers, spend, retailing, merchandising, promotions, events, lettings etc.

·  Monitors performance and reports regularly on a series of key indicators including visitor numbers, visitor satisfaction, learning, market penetration of key audiences etc.

b)  Site Management

·  Takes responsibility for the overall management of the whole site including the land within the National Park lease, the car parks and the causeway, maintaining an effective site management plan

·  Draws support from a range of specialist staff who provide guidance and advice on key aspects.

·  Agrees priorities and maintenance programmes with the South Warden Manager who provides a maintenance service for the grounds, trees and car parks through the South Warden team. Ensure visitor safety and provide a high standard of presentation

·  Develops a close working relationship with the Park’s Ecologist and Archaeologist to achieve an understanding of the range of constraints, features and opportunities which the site presents and to manage the site in accordance with their advice

·  Agrees priorities for maintenance, repair and presentation with the Authority’s Building Projects Officer (who holds the maintenance budget for NPA buildings and provides advice and programming for building projects and maintenance ) Ensuring the protection of the historic fabric and the presentation of the building in such a way as to optimise opportunities for interpretation and understanding and also avoid risks and inconvenience to the visitor

·  Ensuring regular inspections, compliance and recording with the relevant statutory protections for the buildings and site.

·  Ensuring regular inspections, compliance and recording with all relevant health and safety regulations, NPA policies and practices, access for all risk assessments, site security, out of hour’s access etc.

·  Responsible for site security (including emergences, out of hours etc.).

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential
Experience / Proven record of successful managerial experience in the leisure/tourism/visitor management field
Budget management especially financial performance and staffing resources.
Management of multi-faceted teams including volunteers
Experience in marketing and retail, able to demonstrate achievements in merchandising, sales and promotional work
Skills/Aptitudes / Business and commercial skills and approach
Proven ability to manage site/property/activity health and safety
Excellent personal and organisational flexibility
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Strong ability to motivate self and others
Effective people management skills
Able to use IT skills and knowledge of financial and business planning principles to contribute to operationally and strategically
Existing knowledge of ecology/archaeology or evidence of ability to understand, engage with and manage sensitive environments
Other / Bilingual (Welsh-English) an advantage
Driving licence an advantage
Commitment to 7-day visitor service, with some evening working and out of hours call out
Understanding and awareness of National Park Purposes and how to apply these to services and initiatives
Commitment to community engagement and social inclusion
