Duns

Pattern Name: UP and DOWN Sulphur/PMD

Originator: Rick Nyles

Tier: Rick Nyles

What insect does it represent: Sulphur or Pale Morning Dun

Hook: Timco TMC921 Size 16

Thread: Danville Pre Wax, Size 6, Yellow

Tail/Shuck: Mirco Fibbetts, White or Brown (3)

Body-Abdomen: Danville Pre Wax, Size 6, Yellow Tread, no dubbing.

Thorax: Hareline Ultra Translucent Light Brown

Wing: UP DN and TROUT, ½ Puff

Tying Instructions

1.  Tie in a good base, I like to start in front of the eye and lay a base down going towards the bend in the hook, come forward 2/3 and then go back to the bend with wide wraps. Cut off tag line.

2.  Tie in 3 tails 1 ½ time the length of the hook. Trim off excess (butt end).

3.  No dubbing is used in this pattern, just thread. Start wrapping thread to the front of the hook and stop 2/3 rd of the way forward.

4.  Using only half of a puff, secure the puff laying flat with the tips over the eye of the hook.

5.  After tying in the puff, work your way back to the point where you tied in the tails. Now working forward make as many wraps as needed going back and forth until you get a good tapered shape stopping behind the puff.

6.  Dub on the ultra translucent dubbing. One behind the puff and two or three wraps in front of the puff until the puff are vertical or tilting towards the eye of the hook.

7.  Finish off head with several wraps up to the eye, whip finish and apply head cement.

8.  Pull out the thorax dubbing to represent legs.

9.  Notes: This pattern can be used for Cahills, Black Quills, Blue Winged Olives (Size 18, 20 hooks), any size 16 to 20 Mayfly. All you have to do is change thread color and hook size. For the small size flies use you discretion on the amount of wing material. Sometimes I like to tie these patters with out tails so the back of the fly breaks the surface film and give it a different look when drifting.

4.  Wrap the tag line around the dubbing. Try and get 5 to 6 wraps. Secure tag line when done with the wraps. Cut off excess tag line.

5.  Lay down 10 wraps to secure the puff. You can keep the rubber ball on the puff or trim it off.

6.  Optional, Add CDC long fibers to give the wing a higher lock. Use one large feather (color natural or brown) at tear off the fibers from the quill and tie in on top of the puff. Wrap 2 to 4 times to secure.

7.  Apply the ultra translucent dubbing. One wrap behind the puff and three wraps in front and against the puff until it is vertical or tilting slightly forward over the eye of the hook.

Wing: UP DN and TROUT Puff

Tying Instructions

1.  Tie in a good base, I like to start in front of the eye and lay a base down going towards the bend in the hook, come forward 2/3 and then go back to the bend with wide wraps. Do not cut off the tag line because this will be used as a ribbing around the body.

2.  Tie in the Microfibbets. You can use 2, 3 or 4. I do not think the trout count them. I like to tie them in with a length 2 time the hook length.

3.  Spin dubbing onto thread. I do not use wax I just wet my fingers when spinning. I prefer a light application of dubbing to keep the body looking thin and you will have more control applying the dubbing. Stop 2/3 of the way up the hook towards the eye.

4.  Wrap the tag line around the dubbing. Try and get 5 to 6 wraps. Secure tag line when done with the wraps. Cut off excess tag line.

5.  Take the tread all the way to the eye of the hook. Place the UPDN and Trout puff at the base of the dubbing. Bring your thread back and wrap towards the back of the puff, come across and wrap towards you in front of the puff. Now wrap the tread across to the back side of the puff. Repeat this process until the puff is secure and the wings lay out to each side.

6.  Wrap your thread up to the hook eye again and bring it back to the puff. Spin on your rubber leg dubbing, fairly loose and bulky but thin at the start. Wrap once around the back of the puff then come over the puff and finish with 2 or 3 wraps in front of the puff.

7.  Finish by wrapping 8 to 10 times in front of the rubber leg dubbing and in back of the eye.

8.  Whip finish and apply head cement.

9.  Pull out rubber leg thorax material to represent legs.

10.  Note: You can use this pattern in a small size fly. Just change the hook size and trim off the wing material.
