Skill Shortage Survey Background

In August 2010, the City of Greater Geelong’s Economic Development Unit commenced the process of undertaking a survey of regional skill shortages.

The survey aims to assist with a better understanding of the range and extent of skill shortages that exist throughout the Geelong Region. Information collected in the survey will be used in a number of ways.

• To facilitate the Geelong Region Skilled Migration Project, a State Government funded program that aims to assist employers fill skilled vacancies that they are unable to fill through local labour markets.

• To inform regional workforce, education and training organisations planning for the future.

• To assist in developing a strategic direction for growing Geelong’s future industry sectors.

A questionnaire was developed (attached) and distributed by mail and electronically to regional businesses across the Region (City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire, Golden Plains Shire and Borough of Queenscliffe). Approximately, 1700 questionnaires were distributed directly by the City and many more were distributed through local networks. Information on the methodology used to compile this report is located at the back of the document.

The positions have been coded against the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian Standard of Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006 and the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO), 2006.
