AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE 599

COURSE SYLLABUS AND REQUIREMENTS

MR. HANNA

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a full year lab course in the principles of environmental science

AP Environmental Science is designed to align with the Advanced Placement curriculum. It provides students with principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze both natural and human-made environmental problems, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them. This course includes two double lab periods per week. Students electing to enroll in

this course are encouraged to take the AP Exam in May.

The activities and materials covered will meet the requirements for students choosing to take the AP exam in the spring. The areas we will cover this year will include the following:

Fundamentals of Ecology and Earth Science 25%

Population 10%

Resources and their degradation 55%

Global Problems 10%

The percentages represent the AP boards breakdown by topic type on the AP test. More information my be found at:

In addition please see the course outline(attached)

Grading

Your final grade for this course will be the weighted average of six grades: the grade you attain each quarter (20% ea) and the grades you attain on the midterm and final exam (10% ea). Your quarter grade is determined on a total points assigned system weighted in the following manner:

Homework 10%

Labs and in class activities 35%

Tests/Quizzes/Projects 55%

I will not figure grades for you during class time, but I am happy to look up your grades with you before school. Grades will be updated and posted on the parent portal per the board of education’s policy.

TESTS

A test will be given at the end of each chapter or unit as provided in the course outline. You will be given at least two days notice prior to a test. You will typically not use a calculator on any test as the AP prohibits their use.

TESTING CONDITIONS

Certain conditions must be maintained while evaluations are being given. If you break any of the rules governing testing conditions, your grade will be determined by the discretion of the teacher and may not be related to your performance on the test.

NO TALKING UNTIL EVERYONE IS DONE.

DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR SEAT UNTIL YOU ARE DONE.

NO SHARING OF BOOKS, CALCULATORS, OR PAPER.

NO LOOKING AT ANOTHER STUDENT’S WORK

QUIZZES

Quizzes will be announced prior to administration. The quizzes will usually be graded in class the same day that they are given.

HOMEWORK

When I assign homework, I expect it to be done by the time you get to class the next day, unless a specific date is given. I do not accept late homework papers. The heading on all homework papers must contain, in addition to your name, the course name, the class period, the assignment page, and problem numbers.

OUTSIDE HELP

Extra help will be available to students through the science department after school once a week from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. If you need additional help, you must make arrangements with me at least one day in advance. When you come in for help, be prepared to ask specific questions.

ABSENCES

On the day you return from an absence you should do the following:

1) Ask a classmate for the notes or demonstration that you missed.

2) Check the classroom assignment board for any work you will need to make-up.

3) Check the student bin for any handouts that you missed.

If you have missed a test, quiz, or lab, then you need to make arrangements to make it up outside of class time. I won’t come looking for you to get your make-up work.

TARDINESS

Anyone who is not in their assigned seat when the bell sounds will be marked tardy or absent. There are no exceptions to this rule. I begin my lectures immediately after the bell sounds, and I expect everyone to be prepared. Once I begin class do not get up to sharpen a pencil, get paper, or anything else to interrupt me. I expect class to be quiet during the lectures.

EXTRA CREDIT

In no case will anyone be given extra credit on an individual basis. All extra credit assignments will be made available to the whole class.

LABORATORY

All students must wear safety glasses and aprons in the lab. Any student wearing clothing, which in the opinion of the instructor presents a hazard, will not be allowed to participate in the lab activity. Any behavior, which presents a hazard either to oneself or others, will not be tolerated. Errant behavior in the lab will be dealt with in the most severe manner.

DEMONSTRATION

On average, there will be at least one demonstration per week.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

1) Complete lab reports and homework as assigned.

2) Successful completion of all tests and quizzes.

Announced tests will be given at the completion of each chapter.

Announced quizzes will be administered at the discretion of the teacher.

3) A midterm will be given at the end of the 2nd quarter.

A final exam will be given at the end of the year.

4) A complete and logically arranged notebook is to be turned in at the end of each quarter for a grade.

5) During each year all students are required to produce an Environmental Science project.
