Textbook: Folse, Muchmore-Vokoun, Vestri Solomon: Great Essays. Second Edition, Houghton Mifflin

Course Materials: textbook, internet access, dictionary, and notebook

Objective: The goal of this course is to develop the ability to write basic, structured academic essays with an emphasis on accuracy and cohesiveness.

Attendance: Attendance is required and crucial for successful completion of the course. No more than two unexcused absences are allowed throughout the semester. On the third absence, you will be withdrawn from the course. If the third unexcused absence occurs after the deadline for withdrawals expires, you will receive a grade of F for the course. Avoid tardiness; being late three times equals to one absence.

Classroom Policies: Please turn off or silence your electronic devices. Please refrain from eating and drinking in the classroom.

Essays: During the course of the semester, you will write and edit four essays. One draft edited by two peers, and one final version of an essay will be turned in to the instructor. Drafts may be handwritten, but the final version of an essay must be typed and submitted in ANGEL.

Homework Assignments: Homework assignments are 20 % of the grade and must be completed by the due date.

Blog: The blog assignment is designed to replace traditional journal-writing. You are required to contribute to the class blog on a biweekly basis by publishing your thoughts about the topics discussed in class. You will receive a credit for each posting that is at least five sentences long and utilizes a variety of sentence types and conventions of the standard English paragraph (topic sentence and support.)

Plagiarism: Plagiarism along with other forms of academic dishonesty will be subjected to sanctions prescribed by the Students’ Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.

Grading Policy:

NAVIGATING ANGEL

General Information:

Your EAP1540 is a Web-enhanced class. This means that you are going to use ANGEL to supplement class instruction. You will need to use ANGEL to:

1. Type and submit answers to homework questions.

2. Upload and submit your essays (#1 and#2). You will write your essays in Microsoft Word, and then submit the final version in ANGEL.

3. Check your attendance and grades.

Logging in:

1. To use ANGEL, go to http://mycourses.mdc.edu

2. Log in with your MDC account username and password.

3. Click on the link to the class. (The link consists of the course ID and reference number of the class.)

Using ANGEL:

1. After you click on the class link, you are in your EAP1540 course.

2. You will "land" on the Lessons page. On this page, your assignments are listed by week.

3. Click "Week 1" to do the homework due on the first week, "Week 2" to complete homework that is due on the second week, "Week 3" for the third week's homework, etc.

4. Always check your syllabus to find out what assignments are due.

5. To check your grades and progress in the class, click the "Report" tab on top of the page.

6. To go back to the assignments, click the "Lessons" tab on top of the page.

Logging out:

To log out of ANGEL, click the button that looks like the power button on your computer on the left side of the screen.
