Course Description:

This is the 3rd year course of a 4 year-long program which deepens its investigation of the language of medicine. This course is an introduction to medical terminology as used by health personnel, including physicians, nurses, dentists, medical secretaries, insurance clerks and medical office assistants. Medical terminology is a useful course in preparation for entrance into any medical course of study such as nursing, emergency medical technician or medical assisting. This course is articulate with Mt. San Jacinto Community College. Students can register to apply for college units at the successful completion of this class.

The student will:

1. Identify word roots and combining forms related to body systems and pathologies.

2. Describe organs of each body system and their functions.

3. Formulate terms related to body systems.

4. Using relevant medical terminology, define and describe pathologies related to body systems.

5. Describe medical procedures, using relevant medical terminology, related to body systems.

6. Interpret medical abbreviations used in the study of body systems.

7. Recertify in Basic Life Support for the Health Care Professional.

8. Complete Common Core literacy assignments such as, but not limited to research based Web Quests, analyzing medical/nursing journal articles, and case studies.

We will use the following textbook which will be provided to you during registration:

Title: Medical Terminology: A Living Language

Your textbook will be provided to you during student registration prior to the beginning of school at no cost to the student. The workbook can be purchased through the bookkeeper ASAP for $30.00. This is optional. However, the homework is assigned from this book. Other options are checking the book out from the library and completing the assigned pages on a separate piece of paper. There is a copy machine in the library at $.15 a copy. You may also check out the workbook and write your answers on a separate piece of paper. Do not write in the checked out book.

Classroom Procedures
Upon entering the classroom take off your hat and then place your back-packs/book bags on the "Back-Pack Table" until the end of class. Do not take them to you seat.


Food and Drink
You will be allowed to drink water everyday during each class as long as it is in a container approved by me. It must be plastic with a secure, spill-proof top. You may never chew gum at any time. No food allowed as it may attract ants. NOTE: If you are an Insulin Dependent Diabetic who occasionally needs to eat due to an Insulin Reaction (hypoglycemia) or have a seizure disorder please inform me ASAP!!!


Room Clean-Up
You will be responsible to maintain the cleanliness of the room at all times. This will include desk cleaning.


Unexcused Lateness & Unexcused Absence
I regard arriving late to class or having unexcused absences as rude behavior. This behavior interferes with your fellow classmates learning and is inconsistent with the expectations of young adults.

Aeries Grades
Grades will be posted every week and will be available through "Aeries" via your home computer. You will never need to come to me to find out your grade. It will always be posted on "Aeries" displaying all graded work, and work that you need to make up due to an excused absence. If you need an access code please call Mrs. Cohen, the Principal’s secretary, for an access code. Please, NEVER throw away any returned work. That will be your evidence that you have completed work that I may have not placed in my grade book. If you do not have the evidence in hand, you will not get the grade updated.


"Once You're In . . . You're In"
You will never be excused to go to any other class during our class-time except to finish an exam and only if it does not strongly interfere with our class time. A bathroom pass will be provided after the first half-hour of class should you need to use the restroom urgently. If you need to use the restroom before the half-hour has passed I will determine the urgency of breaking the school policy. Should this be a routine, I will call your parents and counsel with them.


Requests For Work During A Future Absence
Please refer to my web page for all assignments. Should you know that you will be absent for a period of time, it is your responsibility to complete all work ahead of time by the due date. You must take any missed exams or quizzes after school or during Pride Period. You must be very PROACTIVE and very RESPONSIBLE in your effort to become an educated and responsible adult.


Weekly Workload

Weekly homework assignments and readings will require approximately 2-4 hours per week. This will vary per the student's maturity and capability. A 50 percent reduction in each late assignment turned in will be adjusted to your grade. Unfortunately we have no time to waste during this fast-paced course.


A Typical Week In Medical Terminology
Heavy teacher and student lecture schedule followed by weekly quizzes and end of Unit multiple choice exams.

Examinations
There will be an in-class, timed quiz or multiple choice exam weekly. If you are absent on the day of the exam, you must take the exam during lunch, Pride Period or immediately after school on Fridays @ 1445 sharp. No exceptions. The following is the break-down of graded work and its value:
Homework: 30 Percent
Exams: 30 Percent

Quizes: 20 Percent

Mini Capstone: 10 Percent

Final Exam: 10 Percent


Office Hours
I will be available for student/teacher/parent conference or assistance after school until 3:30. I will also be available before school at 7:15.


Voluntary Flight Meetings
The room will be made available for voluntary Flight Meetings after school by appointment.

Absences
If you are absent from class, for any reason, you are still held responsible for all individual and "Flight" work on the date assigned as other students in your "Flight" will be counting on you to do your part. This course is a TEAM EFFORT. Thus, when absent; call your "Flight Leader" or another Flight member for details of the day's activity or future assignments. (THIS IS CRITICAL).


How To Maintain One's Sanity This Year
1. Take the course seriously from the first day of class
2. Begin studying for finals from the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
3. Stay ahead in your readings at all times AT ALL TIMES!!!!!
4. Eat well, exercise and get enough sleep.
5. DON’T GET A PART-TIME JOB! Especially if you are part of any extracurricular activity or if you are taking 2 or more AP classes.
6. Do maintain your social life; just don't let it interfere with your school work
7. Let your parents or guardians see how hard you are working. Don't keep them in the dark. They may be very helpful to you when you are stressed. Remember that they want you to succeed, not burn out.
8. Communicate with your Flight frequently and effectively (This is CRITICAL)
9. Communicate with me. Don't keep me in the dark either. I will be happy to guide you as well. Oh, by the way, I get stressed too!

Please bring the following items to class daily
1 Pen for notes, and pencil for quizzes. Two blue or black ink only. Also, one yellow highlighter and a red pen.

2. College Ruled notebook paper. No spiral papers or notebooks will be accepted
3. Place all notes in the separate 1 inch binder you purchased from Staples or any store of your choosing. All notes, homework, readings and maps will be kept in the binder and brought to school every day. Place your class syllabus at the very front of your notebook. I will begin the “no-notice” notebook inspection after 15 Sep 2012.

4. 3X5 inch note cards to keep track of all the new suffixes, prefixes, and roots you will learn.
