WATER MANAGEMENT

Term Project

January 2002

The following term project was developed as a result of the water crisis of the past year and the fact that many of the graduates from this class will either become agricultural producers, or provide services to producers.

The intent of this exercise is to replicate a job as an agrologist. A medium to large agricultural producer comes to the firm willing to pay for an in-depth report that will provide an overview of the current situation in their area and recommendations they can use to make management decisions. The contract involves a formal report as well as a formal presentation to the shareholders in this farm. The manager of the firm assigns you and 2 to 3 other junior staff to complete this contract.

Assigned groups are listed further in this handout. Production units include grain only (8000 acres cultivated), livestock (cow-calf) only (750 head on 3200 acres grazing and 800 acres cultivated), or a mixed farm (250 cow-calf on 1200 grazing and 2800 acres cultivated). Each group is assigned a land location and a production unit type as listed above. The group is expected to produce a professional type agrologist report explaining the geography and geology of the site, an explanation of the effect of the lack of water over the past few years on the next few years production and both short term and long term options/recommendations for water management to “drought proof” an operation in this area. Although the main focus will be “drought proofing”, the reports must also consider the implications of a series of wet years and/or a 1 in 25 year storm event. Reports must be fully referenced to justify all findings and recommendations.

Each group will make a formal presentation to the directors/shareholders of the production unit (the class) and submit their report during the last two weeks of classes. All reports should follow the standard format for a formal consulting report.

The following is the Group Number and members as well as the land location of the “home” quarter. For simplicity, assume the land in question is within a four (4) mile radius of the “home” quarter:
