McCormick Science Institute Research Award

This research grant provides funding for research that implements the Academy’s Research Agenda for Dietetics. The Academy’s Research Agenda for Dietetics presents numerous research needs. A topic or topics for the McCormick Science Institute Research Award will be selected by the Academy Research Committee. The focus of the award will remain the same for the next three years. Only proposals addressing the selected topic(s) will be considered for funding. $5,000 is available, but half will be awarded only after a satisfactory final report has been submitted to the Academy Foundation and the Academy Research Committee.

The topic potentially supports the following Academy Priorities for Research:

§  Basic Physiology Research and Nutrition Research

§  Dietetics Research – Nutrition Care Process and Health Outcome Measures

Research Topic:

The Academy’s Research Committee’s recommended focus is:

1. Understanding the role of spices and health:

§  Role of spices in modulating oxidative stress or inflammation;

§  Role of spices in affecting dietary quality and intake in a variety of disease states (e.g., oncology, obesity, blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, etc.);

§  Various dietary assessment methodologies to capture quantities and types of spice consumption

Studies may be cell culture, epidemiologic analysis of existing data/ secondary analysis, intake surveys/addition of spice intake data collection, systematic reviews and/or evidence analysis by the Academy.

Examples might include:

§  Prostate cancer cell dose-response study of a specific spice with potential anti-inflammatory properties;

§  Secondary analysis of spice intake in clinical trials and observational studies, such as the NHLBI Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) or the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), with a focus on spices with known anti-inflammatory or antioxidant properties;

§  Survey of spice intake in an ethnically diverse population and look at correlation with sodium and fat intakes;

§  Measure of anti-inflammatory properties of spices in relation to shelf-life.

The sponsor’s general topic is: Potential Health Benefits of Culinary Herbs and Spices. They will only fund research that involves humans and not animals. The Institute has five broad areas, or "Pillars", of focus within their research program. These include:

§  Antioxidants

§  Inflammation

§  Weight Management

§  Dietary Assessment

§  Diet Quality
