Website:

The course website gives information on important events in the course (such as exam days and times). You can also find the course syllabus and homework assignments here. There is also a link to the student guide (see the green box in the lower left-hand corner.)

Grading:

Your grade for the course is based on a uniform component and a sectional component. The uniform component of your grade is determined by your scores on the two midterms and your score on the final exam. The first midterm counts for 25%, the second midterm counts for 35% and the final exam counts for 40%. The sectional component of your grade will be based on:

Quizzes 40%

Team Homework 60%

The gateway test (see below) can also influence your grade.

Quizzes:

There will be one quiz per week taken during class time on every Wednesday. Each quiz will take about 20 minutes at the beginning of class. No make-up is given. I will drop two lowest quiz score.

Gateway Test:

There will be one gateway test covering important algebra skills. The deadline for passing the gateway test is: Tuesday, January 31. If you do not pass the gateway test by then, your grade for math 105 will be reduced by one-third of a letter grade. For example, if you earned a grade of “C” in Math 105 but did not pass the gateway by Wednesday, October 5, then your grade for Math 105 would be lowered to “C-.“

Proctored gateways are administered in the gateway lab (B069 East Hall) and may not be taken more than twice per day.

You can start practicing for and taking the gateway tests as soon as your instructor provides you with a gateway password. You can practice for the gateway from any computer at any time before Wednesday, October 5. The website for the Math 105 gateway test is:

http://instruct.math.lsa.umich.edu/classes/105/gw/

Successful students begin practice gateways as soon as possible.

Calculator:

You must have a TI-83 calculator (or a very close equivalent) for this course. Bring your calculator to class each day. You will be allowed to use your calculator on the midterm exams and on the final exam.

Homework:

There is two types of homework in Math 105: Individual homework and team homework. Individual homework is assigned after every class. It is not collected or graded, but will prepare you very well for the quizzes. We will discuss your questions on the individual homework for up to 20 minutes at the start of class. Team homework is assigned on a weekly basis throughout the semester. Team homework consists of challenging problems that you will work on with other people from the class. Team homework is collected and graded during the semester.
