Contest II : Emblem Presentation.

Compere 3: Dear friends! Today you will learn about different masks which American teenagers use while celebrating Halloween. At Halloween parties American children try to disguise themselves as much as possible so that none of their friends & schoolmates could guess who is hiding under the mask. Most popular Halloween characters are werewolves, mummies, witches, vampires, ghosts, the members of the Adams Family, Dracula & monsters . Let’s see how these spooky creatures look like & what they are known for. (Pupils wearing costumes of various spooky creatures come to the middle of the stage & introduce themselves).

Werewolves: We are scary werewolves. In fact we are people who turn wolves at a full-moon night or whenever we want.

Mummies: We are mummies. Mummies are the bodies of dead people which were balmed & buried in ancient Egypt. We are always wearing bandages all about our bodies

Witches: We are flying witches. But we don’t need a plane. A broomstick is a fabulous transport. Our best friends are black cats because they help us to do a lot of harm to people. Ha-ha! (The witches are moving in a circle trying to show the way they fly on their broomsticks).

Ghosts: We are ghosts. Ghosts are souls of dead people. We like to haunt in old castles & other buildings. We enjoy frightening people at night. (The ghosts move across the stage pronouncing strange scary sounds).

Vampires: We are bloodsucking vampires. We leave our dead bodies at night & suck the blood of living people. We are ever-living creatures. But if you want to kill a vampire you must put a stake through his body.

Frankenstein: I am a monster. The scientist Frankenstein created me & named me after him. I am made of pieces of flesh & skin. I’ve got a lot of scarves. I look very scary.

The Adams Family: We are very wicked & horrible family. We are a grandfather, a father, a mother, a daughter & a son. We usually wear black clothes. We live in an old & shabby castle. We hate people & play tricks on them.

Goblins: We are scary little elfin creatures. We live in the houses or in the woods. We work mischief or evil.

(All the children who represent the spooky creatures sing the song “Witches come on Halloween”)

Witches come on Halloween

Witches come on Halloween,

Witches come to stay.

Here’s a witch with a tall black hat,

Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey!

Here are the whiskers of her cat,

Watch out now or scream,

Jack-o’-Lantern looking at me,

It is like a dream!

Pumpkins shining bright,

With their candlelight.

Bats and goblins coming too,

Watching out for you – BOO!

T: Dear teams, I have drawings of different spirits & ghosts but I have messed them up & now I don’t remember their names . Here’s a pile of cards with the names of spirits on. And now we have come close to our next contest . Your task is to match the cards with the names of spirits with the correct pictures.

Contest III: Match the name of a spirit with the correct picture . (The pictures describe vampires , witches , ghosts , mummies , monsters , etc.)

Compere 4: Dear friends! Halloween just wouldn’t be what it is without Jack-o’-Lanterns , which are made of pumpkins. Today we’re going to tell you about the history of these pumpkin Jack-o’-Lanterns & you’ll learn how to make them. Teams, please, listen to the story very attentively. After listening you are to be ready to participate in Contest IV , which is based on the story. ( The teams are listening to a recording of a story).

In Ireland , where Halloween began , the first Jack-o’-Lanterns weren’t made of pumpkins . They were made out of rutabagas , potatoes , turnips , or even beets !

There is an old Irish legend about a man named Stingy Jack who was too mean to get into heaven & had played too many tricks on the devil to go to hell. When he died , he had to walk the earth, carrying a lantern made out of a turnip with a burning coal inside . Stingy Jack became known as ‘Jack of the Lantern ‘or ‘Jack-o’-Lantern’.

From this legend came the Irish tradition of placing Jack-o’- Lanterns made of turnips & other vegetables in windows or by doors on Halloween. The Jack-o’-Lanterns are meant to scare away Stingy Jack & all the other spirits that are said to walk the earth on that night . It wasn’t until the tradition was brought to the United States by immigrants that pumpkins were used for Jack-o’-Lanterns.

Compere 1 : Now you know what the origin of Jack-o’- Lanterns is & what they are meant to be for on Halloween . Now arrange the statements given on your test sheets in the order they appeared in the story you’ve listened to.
