Lesson and/or Unit Title: Percentages Week 1

Stage 1 – Desired Results

Amount of Time: 94
Common Core Standards: 7.RP.3, 7.EE.3
Student Learning Objective (s): I can recognize situations in which percentage proportional relationships apply. I can apply proportional reasoning to solve multistep ratio and percent problems, e.g., simple interest, tax, markups, markdowns, gratuities, commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error, etc. / Essential Questions: What is a sales tax and what is the tax rate for Mississippi? What are some jobs that earn commission? What is an interest? Is having a high interest good or bad? Can we use interest as a way of making extra money?
Lesson Outcome (s): Students will be able to calculate sales tax, tip, and commission by using the percent portion and by learning steps of find the percent of a number. Students will be able to calculate simple interest by using the interest formula. / Key Vocabulary: sales tax, tip, markup, commission, simple interest
Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence
Performance Task: Using the Frayer Model TSW find a picture of an item they want to purchase. Each student will calculate the discount amount, sales tax, and total price of the it. (Rubic is attached)

Stage 3 – Learning Plan
Anticipatory Set (10):
Monday-Bellringer. What is a tax rate and what is the tax rate for Mississippi. TT and TS will discuss tax rates about how they differ from state to state.
Tuesday-Bellringer and go over homework
Wednesday- Bellringer and go over homework
Thursday- Bellringer and go over homework
Friday-Review for unit assessment
Input/Modeling/Crafting (25):
Monday- TTW demonstrate how to calculate sales tax, tips, and commission by using the percent proportion.
Tuesday- TTW will review and re-teach how to calculate sales tax, tips and commission. TTW demonstrate how to calculate simple interest using the formula I=prt
Wednesday-TTW review and reteach sales tax, tip, commission, and simple interest using question and answer session.
Thursday- TTW review this week’s lesson and reteach if needed.
Friday-After quiz- Review for unit assessment
Guided Practice(25):
Monday- We will calculate sales tax, tip, and commission from word problems created by the teacher.
Tuesday-We will calculate simple interest from word problems created by the teacher.
Wednesday-We will go through several examples of sales tax, tip, commission, and simple interest problems to check for understanding and answer any needed questions.
Thursday- We will review this week’s lesson using question and answer session.
Friday- TSW take unit assessment
Independent Practice (20):
Monday-TSW copy vocabulary words on KIM chart. TSW complete sales tax, tip, and commission assignment Buckle Down Workbook pgs. 41 & 47 TTW monitor and assist where needed and pull students for one-on-one practice.
Tuesday- TSW complete Simple Interest from Buckle Down Workbook pg. 45. TTW monitor and assist where needed and pull students for one-on-one practice.
Wednesday-TSW create a Frayer model of an item they would like to purchase. On the Frayer Model, the student has to calculate the discount, sales tax, and total price of the item. If students finish early they will start their Mobymax lesson.
Thursday- We will play Jeopardy to review this week’s lesson.
Friday- TSW take unit assessment. Once students are done they will complete Mobymax lessons.

Monday- Share Out about today’s lesson.

Throughout this lesson there will be some small group activities and TTW pull students for small group remediation and/or one-on-one, challenge game, and hands on activities. Students who finish faster will be given additional work for extra credit or complete lessons on Mobymax and Study Island / Technology Integration:
