The Nurturing Programme
Do you want the best out of family life? Join our free 10 week programme, looking at different topics including; understanding why children behave as they do and recognising the feelings behind behaviour. Contact Sue Montgomery or Nikki Dixon on 01539 239150 for more information.
Baby Club
A programme of activities and information for new parents and their babies. Meet new friends and learn baby massage, first aid and baby play.
School Holiday Activities
During the school holidays we run a number of fun activity sessions held across the area, for children 0-11 years and their families. For October Half Term activities see timetable on page 5 or contact your local centre for details and to book places.
Stay and Play
Free fun sessions. Play and learn together, enjoy art and craft, songs and stories and messy play, for under 5s and their families.

‘Bambies’
Stay and Play @ Milnthorpe
Starting Tuesday 4th November 9.30 – 11.00am in Milnthorpe Primary School hall. Come along and enjoy fun free activities with your child/ren. No need to book, just turn up!
Inbetweenies
A 7 week course that helps you to understand: how your child is developing, the value of play and how to share this journey together. For parents/carers with children age 6 months to 15 months.
Bookstart
Come and enjoy stories and rhymes and help your child to develop a love for books, for children 12-30 months. Free resources to take home given at each session. Contact Dawn Lockwood for more information on Bookstart.
Twins
Held at our Kendal West Children’s Centre this is a support group providing fun activities, experience sharing and support for parents/carers and their twins/triplets.
Bym Bam
These fun sessions, allow children to explore music through simple percussion and song. Delivered by Clare Eccles from Brewery Youth Arts.
Bym Bam for Young Parents
Music, stories, craft, snack and chat! Especially for young parents under 24 and their children ages 0-4 years. Contact Sue Montgomery on 01539 239 150.
Jumpstart
‘Does your child become bored quickly?’ ‘Do you need new ideas of how to play with your child?’ A 6 week programme of play activities for parents/carers and their children. For more information contact Sharon Howarth.
Childminder Support Group
A drop-in support group. Activity session for children, support, advice and early years updates for childminders.
Bumpstart
Hosted at our Kendal West centre, this is a 3 week antenatal course for expectant parents including preparing to meet your baby, breastfeeding, looking after yourself and bonding with your baby. Booking essential – via Helme Chase on 01539 795375.
The Recovery Toolkit
A free 12 week programme for women who have experienced domestic abuse/violence. The course is designed to assist you to increase your safety, to develop positive lifestyles, coping strategies, build self esteem and feel more confident.
Smile4Life
Is an oral health campaign that supports families to establish good oral health routines and to register with a dentist. Contact our Smile4Life Champions, Kay Cheer or Sharon Howarth for more information or visit www.smile4life.org.uk
Groups for children age 0-4 years with additional needs:
Play & Chat Group
A monthly group which gives you the chance to meet other parents and children.
Professionals from Health and Education come along to the group to answer questions and offer support.
Family Support and the Children’s Centre
At the Children’s Centre, we offer a range of services to meet the needs of children
(aged 0 -18years) and their families. Children’s wellbeing is at the heart of all our work.
Some families choose to come along to activities and groups, including holiday fun days and courses, whilst others may be looking for more individual support. Please get in touch if you think we may be able to help.
Child Bereavement Support Service
Child Bereavement UK is working in partnership with Barnardo’s to provide support and information to bereaved children and their families in South Lakeland. Our services are provided free of charge to children aged 0 -18 years and their families who live within the Barnardo’s Sure Start Children’s Centre areas. Please get in touch to find out more about what we offer.

Summer Holiday Fun at the Children’s Centres
Over the school summer holidays one of the many activities we ran was The Rhyme Challenge:
We challenged families to learn eight food related rhymes over the two weeks.
We had fun with activities that included wobbling jelly, making tarts with fresh fruit, singing about disappearing grapes,
catching fish and making sandwiches for a tea party. We sat down together and shared the food we had made before singing the rhymes and songs.
The children did so well that they all received a certificate and a prize of a book about keeping safe in the summer. Well done everybody!
