Lesson Plan for Demonstration Speech

How to pass a rugby ball

I. Objective: I will teach the fundamental concepts of how to make a rugby pass.

“Grabber”: Greatest tries video. I will show the video as an example of rugby passing to engage the audience in the topic.

Description of visual aid: I will use a video clip, rugby ball, and audience volunteers.

II. Step-by-step presentation:

Setup: Have the video on you tube on my computer and ready to play. I will set up the classroom to give me room for volunteers to run a few passing drills

Step 1: flat pass– get 4 volunteers passing back and forth, focus on wrists

§  Have students, in pairs, face each other with a ball

§  Have first player grab the ball with finger tips pointed down

§  Tell him/her to tuck their elbows tight to their rib cage

§  Using his/her wrists, player will pass the ball to the partner

§  Players should focus on using wrists, and keep elbows tight to their rib cage

Step 2: triangle game – 3 v 1, two balls - 1 person in the middle. These games will incorporate fundamental techniques of catching and passing. I will periodically stop the game to correct and instruct technique.

Key points: Hands out, elbows up, eyes on target

§  3 players stand in a line facing a 4th in front of them.

§  2 of the 3 players are holding a ball

§  1 player passes the 4th the ball, who passes it back to the player not holding a ball

§  Once #4 makes the pass, the player holding the 2nd ball passes it to #4

§  As #4 improves, the players can increase the intensity/rate of passes

Step 3: Line passing, no step

§  Have the players stand in a straight line, arm length apart with hands out ready to receive the pass

§  Key points: hands out, point finger tips to your target, look the ball in/out, communicate left and right

Step 4: single line 1 step

§  Same as above but have players step as they pass

III. Conclusion:

·  Ask the volunteers to state key points they’ve learned. Conclude with the statement: these are the basics of a flat pass. You will need to master these fundamentals to play the game.
