What is

College for Kids is a summer enrichment program with 26 classes offered to students in the Pike County area who are high achievers in school. It is staffed by enthusiastic, imaginative educators who have an interest in working with bright youngsters.

l Who sponsors the program?

The College for Kids program is sponsored by the Ross-Pike Educational Service District’s gifted program in Pike County.

l How do students qualify?

Students qualify if they have high academic achievement. Teachers must sign all registrations to verify that your child is performing in the top 30%. Register according to the grade you are in NOW.

l How are classes scheduled?

Students may choose one class only among the 26 offered this year. Classes run for one week, June 13-17 (Monday thru Friday), from 9:00 to11:30 a.m. All classes will be held at the PIKE COUNTY CTC. A minimum of ten students is needed to ensure the availability of each class. Class enrollment is limited to 20 students so register early. (A child is not registered until payment is received.)

l How much does it cost?

The cost per class is $23.00. Some classes may charge an additional Materials Fee, so please read carefully. A “College For Kids” T-shirt is available for $7.00.

l What if we have a conflict?

Teachers will be flexible in allowing students to leave a little early or to miss a day of class. We will try to work to see that your child has the best educational experience possible.

l How do I register?

Complete the registration and return it to your school office by Friday, May 20, or mail to Julie Pekkala, Gifted Coordinator, P.O. Box 578, Piketon, OH 45661 postmarked by Friday, May 20. Late registrations will be accepted, BUT most classes fill up by the registration deadline, so early sign-up is recommended. (You may go to http://www.rpesd.org/ to get the same information on this brochure or to print a new registration form if needed...however, online registration is NOT available.)

l How will I know what class I am in?

Upon returning the form with payment, you are officially signed up for College for Kids. If you give an email address, we will verify your class with an email notification.

Some of your favorite books are creations of the amazing author and illustrator Eric Carle! Let’s read and explore The Tiny Seed, Mr. Seahorse, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Mixed Up Chameleon, and the Very Lonely Firefly. Let’s create some snacks, stories, & art projects for each book! Then, we’ll have an Art Show to share your creations! MATERIALS FEE: $8.00

Have you ever wanted to learn to cook? Then this is the class for you. We will be cooking (and of course eating) yummy food, such as pizza, homemade bread, and ice cream. We will also make a recipe book, learn about healthy food and cooking tools, and play fun food games. You’ll even get to decorate and take home your own apron. You’re never too young to learn how to cook! So sign up for Let’s Get Cooking for a yummy good time!!! MATERIALS FEE: $7.00

TOTALLY TROPICS! (Grades K-1) .….………………..................................................Miss Ashlee Moore

ALOHA! Come dance, learn, and have FUN because we’re off on a tropical adventure to Hawaii! Come experience Hawaiian traditions, build your own volcano, create a tiki mask and lei, taste traditional Hawaiian treats, and learn about the animal and plant life in the Pacific Ocean! Come take an adventure into the world of Laura Numeroff books! We will be completing an author study of her famous books including If You Give a Moose a Muffin, If You Take a Mouse To School, and many more! We will be reading these books and completing many fun activities along with them. We will have food tastings, science experiments, crafts, and math and language games related to each book. YOU CAN SWIM! (Grades K-2) .......................................................... Mrs. Linda McAllister + Lifeguards

Whether you are a beginning swimmer or somewhat experienced in the water, this class is for you! The course includes basics in aquatic safety and pool orientation, proper swimming techniques and stroke development, as well as plenty of fun and games. Bring your towel and swimsuit and get ready to take a dip in the pool! This class will meet at the outdoor pool at the PIKE COUNTY SWIM CLUB on 7TH Street in Waverly from 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. each day. “D” is for dinosaurs…digging, dioramas, delicious dough, dancing, and drawing. We’ll delve into the “days of the dinosaurs” with lots of hands-on activities. Both boys & girls will enjoy this! Do you love creepy, crawly critters? Learn all you want about the slippery, slimy, and slithering creepy crawlers that share your world. Join the fun and experience a variety of science experiments and activities using food and other household items. Discover scientific principles in chemistry, physics, earth science and biology as you conduct Exploding Marshmallows, Color Changing Grape Juice, Tricky Taste Testing, Ice Cream in a Bag, and more. In this class, you’ll have an exciting time of reading and cooking as you learn how to make recipes based on 3 stories: Little Red Hen (mini pizzas), Cock-a-doodle-do (strawberry shortcakes), and The Very Hungry Caterpillar (fruit kabobs). You’ll learn how to read recipes and create your own! We’ll make collages of healthy foods and non-healthy foods from magazines to help determine which recipes will be most healthy. Meet the American Girls throughout history. Explore the time periods in which they lived. Learn about the games they played and make crafts reflective of their time. We start out learning the fundamentals of how to mix colors. Then we’ll work out our designs for our final projects. Now for the fun part---PAINT! Forget using a paintbrush! We will explore alternate methods of applying paint. Have you ever used gelatin to make a print? How about painting on tile? Create & have fun while making beautiful art! MATERIALS FEE: $8.00

Join us for fascinating experiments like Erupting Volcanoes, Slippery Slime, Oobleck, and more! We’ll work together to practice observing, measuring, recording, and experimenting as we become Summer Scientists. Would you like to taste foods that come from the Rainforest? How about meet some animals that live there? Rainforest Rescue allows you to learn about the rainforest through a colorful, hands- on journey, which allows you to experience its climate, colors, and sounds. Explore the fundamentals of theater-making by focusing on one of the greatest musical theater productions of all time—The Lion King! Do you like taking pictures? Then this is the perfect class for you! You will learn the basic skills of operating a digital camera, and you’ll get to explore the outdoors, taking photos to display at the end of the week. Calling all brilliant wannabe inventors! If you want to spend your summer researching how to become a millionaire—oops, I mean…inventor---apply here. Students in this course will study the history of famous inventions, generate their own ideas, and design blueprints for their creations. At the end of the week, students will research the process of obtaining a patent.

STOP MOTION ANIMATION TO VR TECHIE (Grades 4-6) ……....................................Mrs. Andi Gilbert

Join our techie class and explore various techniques in computer animation and virtual reality! Turn everyday objects such as toys & clay into stop motion movies using your electronic device & Stop Motion app. You will also build your own virtual reality viewer using Google Cardboard and explore a variety of apps that allow you to visit new places, play immersive games, fly through space and more in a simple and fun way without even leaving the classroom! *You will need a small electronic device (iPod, iPhone, or Android phone) for use in the Google Cardboard viewer. Come explore the world of professional writing! Writers create much more than just books!! They write movie scripts, newspaper articles, poems, commercials, and even presidential speeches! Throughout the week we will examine each of these writing careers, and invite guest writers to visit and share with us! By gathering inspiration from professional writers, we will have the opportunity to do real world writing. WHO KNOWS? This could launch your future career!

THE MAGICAL WORLD OF HARRY POTTER (Grades 4-6) .….….............................Ms. Danielle Cook

Spend a week inside the wizardry world of Harry Potter! You’ll begin the week by determining your wizard name, creating your own magic wand, and being sorted into your Hogwarts house by the Sorting Hat. Throughout the week, you can earn points for your house by playing Quidditch, finding Horcruxes, demonstrating your knowledge of wizard life, and winning other fun games. Ever drive across a bridge and wonder what it took to get it there? Do you dream of designing buildings? Have you ever thought of a way to make something easier to do? Maybe a career in engineering is in your future. Every day, engineers come up with creative ways to help solve problems that are important to society. In this class we will be working on small projects that will test our creativity, problem solving, and teamwork capabilities. Build a better catapult, a taller tower, and a longer bridge. Hello Percy Jackson fans—Welcome to Camp Half Blood! Imagine that you are a demigod—half-human blood and half-god ichor coursing through your veins! At Camp Half Blood, we’ll be training by exploring your Greek roots and investigating your family trees. Monsters will also be lurking around every corner, so prepare to defend yourself by furthering your knowledge of Greek mythology.
