Julius Caesar: RAFT Writing

Explanation: RAFT writing is a type of topic that allows you to explore certain characters, themes, and formats in a creative fashion. Choices are read across the line, giving you a role to write from, an audience being addressed, the format in which the writing should appear, and the topic.

Directions: The idea is for you to address the prompt (or topic) from the point of view of the given role. Be creative, but use information from the text to guide you, especially in the characters, how they may speak, and what they may say.

For example: If you choose the role of Caesar’s Ghost you will write a conversation using a play format between the Ghost, Soothsayer, & Calpurnia.

Calpurnia: Why didn’t you stay home like I begged you to? I told you that something bad was going to happen.

Ghost: I am sorry my dear Calpurnia. At least I was not a coward.

Role / Audience / Format / Topic
Cassius / Brutus / Email / Defending yourself for taking bribes
Portia / Brutus / Suicide Note / Why she swallowed “hot coals”
Caesar’s Ghost / Soothsayer & Calpurnia / Conversation / Regretting not listening to them
Marc Antony / People of Rome / Blog / Thoughts on Caesar’s death and the Conspirators
Brutus / People of Rome / A rant / The importance of honor
