Job Title: Research and Business Development Officer

Salary: £21,383 - £25,504 per annum, pro rata, depending on skills & experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

Contract Status: This post is available from 1 January 2014 and will be offered on a permanent basis.

Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, full time

Location: University Park Campus

Reporting to: Business Manager

Purpose of the New Role:

The key function of the post is to provide an underpinning operational contribution to the activities of the Engineering Faculty RBDM team.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Main Point of Contact: Act upon contacts for enquires from academic staff and from industry; provide advice and assistance where relevant and redirect enquiries appropriately.
The post-holder is required to act in an advisory capacity eg advising on procedure and regulations. It is also the responsibility of the post-holder to develop and regularly review and modify systems in response to changing needs. / 20%
2. / Research Grant Submission: Provide appropriate level of support to assist the team of RBDM’s in the preparation of research grant submission, downloading and disseminating documents and submission requirements. Keep up to date with developments in research councils and other funding bodies with regard to changes in regulation, eligible costs and application. Liaise with the Faculty of Engineering’s Faculty Research Office for all research grant submissions. / 20%
3. / Event Organisation: Manage and facilitate at meetings and events as required, supporting the RBDM team, resolving any queries and unforeseen problems and ensuring a successful outcome. Liaise with other relevant Faculty staff as appropriate. This will include organisation and planning of meetings and visits from industry, preparing agendas, keeping minutes and circulating information. / 20%
4 / Funding Opportunities: Research, collate and distribute information with regard to new funding opportunities to relevant academic colleagues. Provide expert knowledge, advice and guidance to academics on research funding application, application procedure and submission deadlines. / 15%
5. / Data Analysis: Maintain and update a database of proposals under construction and provide management information to Senior Faculty Management to enable the team to monitor progress and to enable strategic planning. / 10%
5. / General Administration: General administration, including arranging travel, filing and collating written and electronic data, photocopying and distributing information, ordering goods/services. / 10%
6. / Website Maintenance: Maintenance of relevant websites and workspace information, ensuring that information is accurate and provided in a timely fashion. / 5%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / ·  HNC/HND or equivalent in a relevant subject, plus significant experience in a relevant role
·  Or, substantial work experience in a relevant role / ·  Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject, plus significant experience in a relevant role
Skills/Training / ·  Excellent organisational skills.
·  Excellent IT skills: fully conversant with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Access; e-mail and the Internet.
·  Excellent oral and written skills, as the role requires effective and clear communication
·  Proven analytical and problem solving capabilities / ·  Knowledge of terms and conditions relating to funding applications to research councils, charities etc
·  Web site maintenance
·  Organisation of events.
Experience / ·  Experience of research grant applications process / ·  Experience of academic administration, preferably gained in a HE context or similar environment
Statutory/Legal / ·  Ability to prioritise workload
·  Ability to work calmly under pressure against tight deadlines whilst paying attention to detail
·  Ability to use own initiative and judgement without recourse to line manager
·  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Information

The role provides efficient and effective support to the team of RBDM’s and more widely to the Faculty as a whole. The post holder is required to act frequently in an advisory capacity eg advising staff on procedure, regulations etc; advising visitors.
It is the responsibility of the post-holder to develop and regularly review and modify systems in response to changing needs eg developing new databases.
