Job Title: Deputy Principal (Curriculum and Quality)

Post Reference No: MAN 22

Job Purpose: To act as one of the two designated Deputies to the Principal.

To lead the development of the curriculum, teaching and learning strategies and the review of underpinning quality systems across the College ensuring their relevance and currency. To deliver outstanding success rates and high added value measurements for all learners.

To work with the Principal and the Deputy Principal (Finance & Corporate Services) to assume overall responsibility for the organisation, management and development of the College. The Deputy Principals support the Principal by providing the inspirational operational leadership and direction necessary for ensuring that the College delivers its mission and values. One of the challenges of the role is that it is responsive to the business and education needs of the organisation and the changing demands placed upon it from the external environment.

This senior post holder will be an active member of the Senior Management Team, contributing to the overall management ethos of the College.

Reports to: Principal and Chief Executive

Grade/Salary: £62,507 – £73,140 per annum which is Point 28 to 37 on the Management Scale

Hours: A minimum of 37 per week during Monday to Friday with flexibility to meet business needs and a willingness to work outside normal office hours being essential for this post.

Vision:

·  We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated professional to provide strategic and motivational leadership and direction of curriculum, teaching and learning strategies and to take overall responsibility for delivering outstanding success rates and high added value measurements for all learners. Whilst this is a strategic post, it is also a hands-on operational role. The successful candidate will have successful experience as a senior manager with curriculum responsibility - ideally in a college or other educational institution with a good or outstanding track record.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities Include:

1.  To attend and contribute effectively to Corporation and College meetings including Full Corporation, Quality & Standards, Senior Management Team, Risk Management, Health, Safety and Welfare Committee, and any others as appropriate.

2.  Establish excellent working relationships with Governors and Senior Management Team colleagues and to provide regular reports, advice, analysis, interpretation and recommendations to the SMT and College Corporation.

3.  Act as one of the two designated Deputies for the Principal.

4.  Deputise for the Principal as necessary, accepting full responsibility for advising the College on key strategic matters.

5.  Act as College nominee for OFSTED and other associated inspections.

6.  With the Principal, lead the planning and organisation of the FE and HE curriculum and its delivery across the College.

7.  Undertake the strategic planning of the FE/HE curriculum across the College in accordance with College policy and frameworks, maintaining oversight of all Quality Assurance process and their effective implementation.

8.  Provide leadership and motivation to raise standards of teaching and learning to outstanding and develop appropriate methodologies for inclusive and personalised learning including new technology.

9.  Play a key strategic role in the development of the College’s vision by working with other members of the College Management Team to secure performance against delivery targets.

10.  Influence and shape local, regional and national policy and strategy in the post 14 education and training environment.

11.  Lead on the production of the College SAR and QIP and produce coherent reports on topics as appropriate.

12.  Plan and organise the delivery of the 14 – 19 curriculum in collaboration with the schools and in particular the Dorset Studio School.

13.  Line manage and motivate the Assistant Principals.

14.  Lead on the forecasting of learner numbers across the College and take prompt action to ensure targets are met.

15.  In co-operation with the Principal, ensure the College has current and future capacity and capability to deliver the planned curriculum.

16.  Liaise with the Deputy Principal (Finance & Corporate Services) and Assistant Principals to ensure the effective timetabling of teaching and learning accommodation.

17.  Identify and achieve targets for all FE/HE curriculum areas to achieve rapid improvements in underperforming areas and achieve above national average success rates in all areas.

18.  Provide inspirational, innovative and dynamic leadership, motivation and management skills to ensure that staff meet or exceed agreed targets.

19.  Advise on training and development plans for academic staff to develop and improve the planning, organisation and delivery of the curriculum.

20.  Ensure that strategies for student retention and achievement are in place and implemented consistently and effectively, achieving higher standards year on year.

21.  Achieve efficiency gains in curriculum delivery through staff utilisation, class size, taught hours and other appropriate means.

22.  Ensure that the College is routinely and systematically securing the views of stakeholders particularly learners and employers.

23.  Involvement in general College activities and other such duties as may be requested by the Principal or Corporation, commensurate with the post.

·  PGCE/Certificate in Education
·  Evidence of pursuing a programme of continuing personal development
·  Record of outstanding leadership in a senior curriculum management role in FE
·  Successful and sustained record of developing systems and processes which have resulted in raising quality and improving teaching standards in a sustained way in FE
·  Understanding the importance of Safeguarding issues
·  Significant senior management experience in FE with a particular focus on quality gained in a wide range of subject areas and/or institutions.
·  Experience of leading a team through a successful Ofsted inspection (Good or Outstanding) and/or experience as an associate HMI.
·  Experience of successfully implementing change
·  Previous successful experience of managing staff and leading service delivery and improvement
·  Experience of representing and promoting an organisation in a variety of external contexts
·  Previous successful experience of producing timely high quality written and verbal financial reports to Board level / ·  Higher management/professional qualification

Terms and Conditions:

·  This is a permanent appointment with an anticipated start date of 1 May 2015, or thereafter by negotiation

·  This is a designated senior post and the Contract of Employment will be based on the provisions of the Kingston Maurward senior postholders’ contract.

·  The salary for this post will be in the range £62,507 – £73,140 per annum which is Point 28 to 37 on the Management Scale.

·  Working Hours will be a minimum of 37 per week during Monday to Friday with flexibility to meet business needs and a willingness to work outside normal office hours being essential for this post. It is expected that for the successful completion of the duties extra hours may need to be worked from time to time, for which there will be no additional remuneration.

·  The annual leave entitlement will be 35 days per annum plus agreed Statutory Bank Holidays and College closure days. The College’s annual leave year runs from 1 September to 31 August.

·  The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a 9-month Probationary Period with interim reviews after 2 and 5 months.

·  The notice period will be three months on either side.

·  Membership of the Local Government Final Salary Pension Scheme/Teachers Pension Scheme is available.

·  The appointment is subject to the College receiving satisfactory references.

·  The successful candidate is required to advise whether they are aware of any health condition or disability which might impair their ability to effectively undertake the duties of the position as outlined above. This disclosure may result in a referral to the Occupational Health Advisor for a medical clearance prior to commencing employment.
