Tooling, Coining & Engineering

The Tooling, Coining and Engineering Branch of the Royal Australian Mint is responsible for the provision of organisation wide Engineering services, manufacture of Australian and selected international Circulating Coin and the supply of tooling in the form of master tools, dies, collars and other specialist machined components to meet Mint manufacturing demands.

Tooling Team

The Tooling Team is responsible for the provision of master tools and punches, coining dies, press tooling, coining collars and specialist automation components in support of operational activities and strategically linked business projects.

The Tooling Team is divided between Master Tools and Die Production and Precision Machining; via separate supervisors.

Individual Role

Reporting to the Master Tools and Dies Team Leader or Workshop Team Leader, Toolmakers perform machining and toolmaking activities in a workshop environment. Members of the team are expected to work well with others and be passionate about their role in producing precision tooling that supports the Mint.

Members of the team need to be flexible, willing and able to apply their skills to meet the production demands of the team, and driven towards continuous improvement.

Under limited direction:

·  Complete precision machining of complex tools, jigs, fixtures and parts using CNC, EDM and conventional metal cutting and grinding machinery.

·  Read technical drawings, specs, standards and guidelines.

·  Undertake job planning for multiple operation work individually and in a team.

·  Develop tool paths, fixtures and machining strategies using CAD/CAM software

·  Maintain machines, tools, equipment and the workplace.

·  Undertake other manufacturing activities as required; including hand polishing and finishing of master tools, coining collars and dies.

·  Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and LEAN programme projects.

·  Liaise with supervisors, clients and engineering, and provide technical advice as necessary.

·  Maintain records using basic computer packages and use computer to retrieve data relating to manufacturing records.

·  Work within the Mints Quality, Safety and Environmental and business management systems.

·  Other duties as directed.

6.  Skills, knowledge and Experience

·  Trade qualifications in toolmaking or machining

·  Good understanding of CNC machining practices across all machine types (Milling, Turning, Wire and Sink EDM, H/T)

·  Highly developed CAD/CAM skills

·  Able to perform all forms of manual machining including complex milling, grinding, EDM and heat treatment is highly desirable

·  Experience in precision polishing and hand finishing

·  Detailed understanding of Australian and International technical drawing and tolerance standards

·  Ability to keep accurate records of meeting deadlines within tight timeframes

·  Experience in the use of an ERP/MRP system

·  Good organisational skills and highly motivated

·  Understanding of cost capture principals

·  Moderate/high level computer skills

·  understanding of ISO 9001 standards

·  Physical fitness to perform the duties of the toolmaker/machinist role
