Dr. Jamie D. Mitchem is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the California University of Pennsylvania. He assisted Dr. Thomas Mueller in the development of a new Geography Major with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Emergency Management concentration and he has become the co-advisor to this major. He is also a co‑advisor for the Earth Science major with a Meteorology concentration. Dr. Mitchem is the Project Leader of the 3 Rivers HAZUS Users Group. This group’s mission is to offer a forum for southwestern Pennsylvania public, private, and academic organizations that use HAZUS‑MH software and related technologies to develop public policy and programs for building disaster-resistant communities.

Dr. Mitchem received a B.S. in geophysics at the University of South Carolina (1998), an M.S. in meteorology from North Carolina State University (2000), and a Ph.D. in geography from the University of South Carolina (2004).

Along with Dr. Mueller, Dr. Mitchem will be presenting a pre-conference workshop on GIS in emergency management and homeland security and holding a roundtable discussion on GIS in emergency management. He is looking forward to talking to people about geospatial applications within emergency management and homeland security.
