ü Your Guidance

o Review and Prioritize Training Topics

§ Outreach updated list: Reviewed the listed generated by Outreach. Mary mention Steve Adelmeyer and Sorah Stein have been working hard on Sexuality training. Donna asked if these trainers have connected with Planned Parenthood. There are a couple of family members who are teaching this to PWD. Donna brought up that it is important to have the parents’ perspective.

§ Employment Topic - Jennifer felt that the EST training by IIDC is something that all DSP could learn. Recommend that training created on employment become a top priority.

§ Health Topic - Dave brought up about Outreach creating Health Assurance training for Case Managers.

Mark suggested a better model for healthcare coordination. He stated the care select managers are somewhat helpful but they are not familiar enough with the individual to necessarily know what interventions to recommend based on the diagnosis. Maybe we should put our resources in the right direction regarding training and make it more global. Those who qualify for care select are few so in big picture – not all get this opportunity in– Does the Health Assurance training talk about health issues and triage the severity of the health issues or condition so that ER visits can be minimized? Trainings include information about how to use the care managers: Are additional resources such as care select managers consulted to discuss if resources are being utilized? Donna talked about the fact that many don’t know who the care select managers are and how to utilize them. Many times the care managers can cut through the paperwork faster and can save a lot of time.

A Fact sheet is being created by Deb Hatfield around Health Assurance topics. The questions above need to be covered for Health Assurance for IPMG & providers.

§ Leadership Topic - It was asked if Incident Reporting (IR) should be under Leadership. Randy said BQIS has a leadership training on this but not Outreach Services; Sharon Hudson has been offering this Face-to-Face training through BQIS. Mary asked if we could get a list of trainings that BQIS offers to add to our list. The best place to put IR would be under Health care and make it a high priority.

§ Life Span Development Topic - added aging and IDD to the list.

§ Mental Health Topic - discussed wanting more training on dual diagnosis. DSP’s are asking for information on the characteristics of specific mental illnesses and strategies for supporting the person. Tera brought up that she would like the Ivy Tech courses to go deeper within this topic as well. Cindy brought up that Outreach would like information about mental health for the staff due to the stress of their jobs. Felt this should stay in mental health and not leadership. Cindy has seen other conferences for staff how to deal with staff stress management. Jennifer Howlett talked how Options talked briefly about this in P&A. Providers on the call all felt this would be a valuable topic to be generated.

§ Person Centered Planning/ISP: Mary mentioned hearing confusion in the field regarding the new Person-centered model that IPMG is using and how roles of DSP’s are different than they were before. Dave told the group that IPMG has put training out on this in April through In-Sync for those who get it and how many it reaches. More training by IPMG is scheduled in July around state for families/guardian on this topic to help them prepare for and use the new person-centered model.

§ Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement: We need to create more training on developing friendships within the community. Can IIDC work on this?

§ Self-Determination: need more training on self determination and self direction to be done by CCLC.

§ Other Training Topics - Something on how to use a computer would be nice for provider and Outreach staff. Ron brought up for those in the Ivy Tech program need to make sure to connect with Ivy Tech for this training.

§ Core A & B: Claudia asked how they get a new nurse through the training. Answer - Contact Juman Bruce at BDDS. Her email is

§ College of Direct Support Review: Ron asked if any INTrain members would like to review some of the CDS material. Please let Ron know ASAP if you are interested. Cindy suggested that Mary send out a request to all INTrain members so that they can be involved if they want to.

ü Updates

o INTrain Input – no responses last month via the web.

o Outreach – Had three more Outreach trainers complete the Train the Trainers (T3) training. Kim Newkirk will present Sensory Integration, Patty continues to work on the crisis- law enforce intervention training. 11 trainers from Outreach attended the co-training event at IIDC on 6/8/09.

o Trainers Network – CCLC at IIDC hosted an event for trainers to market co-training and get feedback on the curriculum and processes. Trainers and co-trainers were video-taped so that videos can be used to market the program across the state. A manual is in the process of being written to go with the T3 training, The trainers network website is nearly complete. It can be viewed at http://www.iidc.indiana.edu/index.php?pageId=1837 .

o DSP Initiative – CCLC is working with DOL to make the apprenticeship program a 3rd pathway to reaching NADSP credentialing levels (registered, certified, specialist) See www.nadsp.org for more information. Steven Steed said they are still waiting to hear from feds about if they still need an NADSP certificate and also waiting to see if the state is going to require the trainings and if there is going to be any money in getting more agencies involved. Randy said the Peter B. has given the OK to see if agencies are interested in pursuing apprenticeships and receiving workforce development Technical Assistance from CCLC and DOL We are in the process of creating marketing materials that will clearly explain the pathways.

o Claudia asked if a brochure on Foundations for Direct Support Professionals has been developed so that ARC Bridges could get to give staff to encourage their participation. Ron will get with Ann Highly about that request.

o Health Initiative: Screenings continuing on core group who transitioned out of FWSDC and MSDC. Training is listed on the calendar and is available. There have been many trainings across the state already.

o General Training Announcements: Randy wanted to mention the momentum in getting the DSP initiative moving and getting results back on the effectiveness.

o The DDRS newsletter will be coming out soon and training initiatives will be highlighted. Is there anything specifically about training that INTrain would like to suggest? What information would be helpful to other providers about the training? The DSP Initiative? Outreach Training? Claudia mentioned that they should know what is out there that in the future they will be able to use and who to contact if they are interested. Add more than the minutes about INTrain – add the other documents. Develop a library of information for others to access.

ü DDRS Recommendations: No recommendations at this time to DDRS.
