Internet2 K20 Meeting @NCAR – 9 August 2012

Breakout Group #3: An IVC Project in the Making: the Planning Process from Idea to Inception w/ Carol Willis

8 participants from NOAA, NSDL, Spark, Texas Educational Television Network, MERIT

· Importance of face to face time and networking

· Collaboration is so important for innovation, for teachers and students

· Can’t place technology burden on teachers

· Much more infrastructure is needed for these concepts to be successful

· In TX every service center has distance learning programs

· Learn by doing – coordinating, marketing, reaching target audience

· Review of this specific project’s details

· Why does K20 need Internet2? For the community, Internet2 provides a service that ISPs cannot/do not

· Baby steps

· Addition to program vs. integral part of program

Lunch

· Dealing with nex gen science benchmarks

· What more to Internet2 is there than content delivery? Applications

· The difference between commodity internet and Internet2 and how schools can take advantage of that

· Importance of middle-ware: not even fellow scientists can use other scientists data, have to make it usable in the classroom

· Make sure to target individual users: distance learners, non-traditional students, rogue/innovative teachers and content creators, free-agent learner

· Kids watching other kids interact: not as good as interaction, but still better than just watching TV

· Access to Internet2 for secondary education pre-service especially important because they really need to know the subjects and the technology, but difficult to reach

After Lunch

· Presidential libraries, museums, sharing source documents

· Eagle net is working on connecting CO schools

· Training needed for distance teaching and interacting through technology, maybe something UCAR Communications could work on

· Getting information to teachers: info -> listserves -> district contacts -> teachers

· HD Webcams for classrooms: Lifesize

· Better training for Science on a Sphere presenters at museums: discussed ideas/opportunities for SOS as group

· Digital libraries greatly assist teachers; how can they play a part in I2?

Wrap-up

· Internet2 meetings are very unique; thoughtful discussion
