Inserting names into Word from the Outlook Address book. (Same as WAB, Windows Address Book)

As most of my contacts are aware, I do not use or recommend using Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express for e-mail. However, we do use Outlook for its address book and calendar features. Kathy synchronizes her PDA with Outlook. We just avoid using it for e-mail. Kathy uses AOL e-mail and I used to use Netscape for my local mail and Yahoo as a second address & to check for virus’. I have used Yahoo exclusively for many years now. (2007)

I just discovered a little extra bonus from using Outlook as your address book.

You can insert an address from your Outlook Contact list into a Word document, such as an invitation to your holiday soiree, by clicking a single button. Unfortunately, Microsoft didn't put that button on the Word

toolbar, so you have to add it. If you do a mail merge, Word can get addresses from the WAB file, but inserting individual names and addresses from the WAB was never made available until now.

To add the Address Book button to the Word toolbar, follow these steps:

1. Open Word and choose Tools, Customize to open the Customize dialog box.

2. Click the Commands tab to view the list of available commands.

3. Click Insert in the Categories box to reveal the list of Insert commands on the Commands list on the right side of the screen.

4. Scroll down to the words Address Book near the end of the Commands list box.

5. Drag the Address Book icon up to the Word toolbar. The Address Book icon joins the other icons on the toolbar!

You only need to do this once, and then it's there for regular use.

As an added point, if you have created an address book in Yahoo, you can export it to the WAB file so it is available for this special use. You do not have to have or use Outlook. The WAB file (Windows Address Book) is available whether Outlook is installed or not. The same file is used by Outlook Express and so is an integral part of Windows.
