<insert location> Indigenous youth urged to apply for the
National Indigenous Youth Parliament 2017
<senator/member for electorate insert name> encourages young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from <insert location> to apply now for this year’s National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP) to be held in Canberra in May.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to participate in a week-long leadership program and receive expert training in how government works, public speaking and dealing with the media,” <insert name> said.
“I urge young Indigenous people in <insert location>, passionate about issues that affect them and their community, and interested in learning about parliament and how laws are made, to apply for the NIYP.
“NIYP will bring together Australia’s future Indigenous leaders. Our young people interested in making a difference.”
The centrepiece of NIYP is a two-day simulated parliament in the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in Canberra on 27-28 May 2017. Participants will debate bills on issues that affect their communities. The bills will be presented to the Australian Parliament for consideration.
“The youth parliament coincides with a parliamentary sitting week in Canberra. I look forward to meeting this year’s youth parliamentarians and discussing the issues of concern to them.
“No specific experience is required to apply for NIYP, apart from a willingness to have a say in what's going on in your community. Successful candidates will be selected based on their ideas and their potential leadership skills," <insert name> said.
NIYP is for Indigenous Australians aged 16 to 25 and will be held from 23-29 May 2017.
Applications must be submitted no later than Friday 3 March 2017. The online application is at www.aec.gov.au/Indigenous, call 1300 103 183, or email .
The Youth Parliament is run by the Australian Electoral Commission in collaboration with the YMCA and the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House.
